FSU falls in the second round of the tournament

Entering the NCAA Division II tour­na­ment for only the fourth time ever in school his­tory, the Lady Bulldogs looked to prove some­thing as they came in with the No. 2 seed in the Midwest region.

Sophomore guard Sarah DeShone knew it was going to be a big step in the pro­gram and said, “[The tour­na­ment] is a great expe­ri­ence, and this was our chance to prove something.”

On tap for the Bulldogs in the first round was Drury (Mo.) College who had earned the No. 7 seed in the same region on March 9. (more…)

CCHA Tournament play comes to a halt for the Bulldogs

Bulldog nation was silenced in Ferris’ last home hockey game of the sea­son and the last game of their play­off series against Bowling Green State University.

Ferris, the num­ber one seed in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, was stunned by BGSU in their three game play­off series that took place March 9–11 at Ewigleben Ice Arena. (more…)

FSU soft­ball team gears up

The FSU soft­ball team took to Florida for its annual Florida Rebel Spring Games Tournament in Kissimmee. With the long dis­tance trav­el­ing, the Bulldogs could not find a way to win it this year as they fell by the score of 6–2 against Shippensburg College. Junior pitcher Dana Bowler pitched the entire con­test, giv­ing up six runs on 10 hits. The Bulldogs man­aged to score only two runs on seven hits, mark­ing a dis­ap­point­ing tour­na­ment for the Bulldogs. The sea­son mark for FSU is now 6–8 over­all and the Bulldogs now head home for their home opener against Aquinas College on March 19 at 3:30 p.m. (more…)

No win? No problem Bulldogs claim sole possession of CCHA title

The FSU hockey team entered the week­end series against Western Michigan University need­ing to gain just a sin­gle point to pull ahead of the University of Michigan and win the CCHA title outright.

Despite falling to the Broncos in a shootout Friday night and being shutout Saturday night, the nation­ally top-ranked Bulldogs were able to pick up the nec­es­sary points in Friday’s tie to claim the 2011-12 Central Collegiate Hockey Association Regular-Season Championship. The league title is only the sec­ond in school his­tory and the first time since the 2002-03 cam­paign. (more…)

Bulldog senior guard/forward Lindsey Pettit was selected as this issue’s “Athlete of the Week” fol­low­ing an out­stand­ing per­for­mance against Hillsdale College (Feb. 22). In FSU’s final regular-season home game, Pettit led the Bulldogs with 13 points as FSU defeated Hillsdale 61–51 to earn the GLIAC vic­tory. The con­test marked Pettit’s first start of the sea­son as she helped the Bulldogs to the “Senior Night” win. Following Wednesday’s win over the Chargers as well as Saturday’s 46–44 vic­tory over Grand Valley State University, FSU fin­ished regular-season play with a 20–5 over­all mark and a 17–2 con­fer­ence record.

This sea­son Pettit has appeared in 25 games for the Bulldogs. She is cur­rently aver­ag­ing 4.2 points per game and has scored a total of 105 points this campaign.

Come watch Pettit and the rest of the FSU women’s bas­ket­ball team Feb. 29 as the Bulldogs host the University of Findlay in the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals. Tipoff is sched­uled for 7:30 p.m. inside Jim Wink Arena.

Ferris shares GLIAC North title, set to face MTU

The goal at the begin­ning of the sea­son wasn’t to just share the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Championship; the Bulldogs sought an out­right back-to-back championship.

“I’m not too fond of shar­ing it, but we were still able to get it after three losses in a row,” Ferris senior guard Dontae Molden said. “That’s a goal we still got accom­plished, it’s just not exactly how we wanted to do it, but we still got it done.” (more…)

FSU defeats GVSU in regular seasons finale

After win­ning the GLIAC North Division Championship last week­end, the Lady Bulldogs turned their focus to the reg­u­lar sea­son finale against arch rival Grand Valley State University.

Coming into the con­test, the Bulldogs held a 19–5 over­all record, but the Lakers showed they weren’t going down with­out a fight. The game came down to the final cou­ple pos­ses­sions; how­ever, FSU man­aged to come away with the big rivalry vic­tory by the score of 46–44. (more…)

Sprinter attains national pro­vi­sional qual­i­fy­ing time

The nation­ally 23rd-ranked women’s track and field team fin­ished ninth out of a field of 11 teams in the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships Feb. 25 in Findlay, Ohio. The Lady Bulldogs tal­lied 32 points in the team race. Hohmann reached the national pro­vi­sional qual­i­fi­ca­tion mark in the 400-meter run after win­ning the event in 57.23 sec­onds. (more…)

Chad Billins is pleased with the way his senior season has turned out

When asked if his cur­rent 11-game point streak had any­thing to do with the Bulldogs cur­rent suc­cess senior Bulldog defense­man Chad Billins mod­estly replied not at all; instead the team is suc­cess­ful because of their depth Billins said.

“Getting scor­ing from all from all four lines has def­i­nitely helped our team and just shows how deep our ros­ter is night in and night out,” Billins said. (more…)
