Campus collaboration

As a journalist, it’s exciting to look around this campus and see all the stories just waiting to be told.

At the same time, it can be a bit daunting.

With so many students, faculty and staff at Ferris, our job as your college newspaper can be, at times, a bit overwhelming. With so many leads to chase down, where should we start?

So, the Torch is asking you, our readers, for some help. We want to know what stories you want to read. We want to hear your ideas.

In last week’s issue, news writer Ashley Bradstreet recapped the awards the Torch won in the 2013 Better Newspaper Contest, which is sponsored by the Michigan Press Association. The Torch was awarded honorable mention for general excellence.

One of the judges said the panel was impressed by the Torch’s “strong reader-involvement.” As an editor, I can think of no greater compliment for a newspaper.

Reader-involvement is what makes the Torch great and is also a legacy I hope to continue as editor-in-chief. Without readers, a newspaper is nothing.

Help us continue to serve you to the best of our abilities. If there’s something you’d like to see in the Torch, contact us via email, Twitter or Facebook. Feel free to stop by our office in the Student Rec Center, as well.

Share with us your story ideas. What topics would you like to see explored? Do you know any interesting people we should feature?

For each and every issue, the Torch is striving to improve and meet the needs of our readers. Let us know how we’re doing.

We want to extend our office beyond the SRC and invite you, our readers, to become honorary staff members. With collaboration, we can continue to make the Torch better for everyone.
