Ferris opened home-field league play against Western Michigan

Ferris State’s club base­ball team would like to share the nation’s national pas­time with the com­mu­nity now that spring is kind of here.

The Bulldogs met the Broncos of Western Michigan University behind Riverview Elementary on April 6 for a dou­ble­header at Win Kellum Field in Big Rapids, and once April 7.

In the final game of the series, Ferris failed to quiet Western’s bats and fell 16–6. (more…)

Evolution of College Hockey

Ferris State to welcome the WCHA

After 33 years spent in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), Ferris State pre­pares to join one of the nation’s old­est col­lege hockey con­fer­ences: the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA).

Ferris’ head coach Bob Daniels has 25 years of CCHA expe­ri­ence in the books, with 21 sea­sons spent as head coach of Ferris.

“[The CCHA] started off with a bunch of small schools and had a bunch of larger ones join,” Daniels said. “It was really a great rela­tion­ship for all the schools. I think the ben­e­fits of it being a good, strong bus league was pos­i­tive for every­one dur­ing that time of col­lege hockey.” (more…)

Ferris State’s athletic director’s work paying off

For the last three sea­sons, Ferris State’s Athletic Director Perk Weisenburger and ath­let­ics staff have worked to improve Division I and II ath­letic pro­grams at the university.

“We have out­stand­ing strengths; our stu­dent ath­letes are part of that. I would attribute our suc­cess to the coaches that we have in our pro­gram and the expec­ta­tions,” Weisenburger said. “Before my arrival, the expec­ta­tion to just main­tain the sta­tus quo may have per­me­ated the depart­ment, and I’d like to hope that if I’ve done any­thing, I’ve estab­lished that we can do much more.”

Ferris State’s ath­letic pro­gram is con­sid­ered the third best GLIAC pro­gram in the nation ranked by the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup stand­ings, and sits at 23rd in the nation. (more…)

 
 
 

Home Opener Delayed

Neutral site chosen for weekend's series of league doubleheaders

Ferris State’s home opener will be put on hold due to a field that remains unplayable impart to Big Rapids’ chang­ing climate.

Ferris’ Lady Bulldogs will instead travel to Caledonia for a week­end of double-header action at Davenport University’s home field, the Famers Insurance Athletic Complex, March 29–30.

Ferris’ first con­fer­ence twin­bill of the week­end will begin league play for foe Lake Erie (2−8) March 29, at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. (more…)

Ferris State unwill­ingly rests its legs after bow­ing out of the CCHA’s last quar­ter­fi­nal play­off round.

Ferris State’s desire to keep the sea­son alive was evi­dent in a tight 3–2 loss March 17 that fea­tured 49 Bulldog shots on net to the Ohio State Buckeyes’ 27.

“It obvi­ously hurts right now. We all wanted to advance to Joe Louis and have a chance to win the last CCHA tour­na­ment ever. But it was not in the cards for us. I am proud of how we grew as a team and the guys left have a bright future,” Ferris’ senior cap­tain Kyle Bonis said. (more…)

Ferris State may reflect on their past sea­sons in the CCHA after Ohio State won game three of the last CCHA play­offs appearance.

“It’s tough to reflect on so quickly. But look­ing back at all the mem­o­ries that have been made. The things we accom­plished as a group, is some­thing very spe­cial,” Ferris’ senior cap­tain Kyle Bonis said, after asked about his expe­ri­ence at Ferris.

Split Series

Game three will test Bulldogs and Buckeyes will to win

One game stands between each team and their near equal desire to reach the CCHA’s semi­fi­nal play­off round at Joe Louis Arena in the league’s final season.

“Nobody wants this to end (on our team). Our play will reflect that,” senior cap­tain Kyle Bonis said. “It will be a bat­tle from start to finish.”

Ohio State sent the best-of-three series to the nec­es­sary third game of the series after defeat­ing Ferris State 3–1 on March 16 in OSU Ice Rink at Columbus, Ohio. (more…)

 
 
 

Ferris Claims First Game

Justin DeMartino's back-to-back goals give Bulldogs boost over Buckeyes

Ferris State has a two-game oppor­tu­nity to reach Joe Louis Arena and the semi­fi­nal play­off round of the CCHA’s last season.

The Bulldogs quelled the Ohio State Buckeyes in the first night of the CCHA Quarterfinal play­off round at Columbus, Ohio with a 4–2 vic­tory, March 15.

Senior left wing Kyle Bonis gave the Bulldogs a 1–0 lead in the first period with a one-timer from the right cir­cle that flew past Ohio State’s goal­tender Brady Hjelle. (more…)

 
 

Three Make National Meet

Rudd's work ethic evident; earns National Championship

Three ath­letes from Ferris State were invited to attend the NCAA Division II National Championship meet in Birmingham, Ala.

Junior long dis­tance run­ner Anna Rudd became the sec­ond women’s track and field mem­ber in Ferris his­tory to earn a national cham­pi­onship title, March 8, after com­plet­ing a 5000 meter run in 16:28.18 on a 200 meter banked course. She out­ran 18 other run­ners in the event’s field.

Had the track not been a banked 200 meter course, Rudd would have sur­passed the record time, 16:28.71, held by for­mer Ferris dis­tance run­ner and 11-time All-American Tina Muir in a five kilo­me­ter event on a flat 200 meter track. (more…)
