Ferris opened home-field league play against Western Michigan

Ferris State’s club baseball team would like to share the nation’s national pastime with the community now that spring is kind of here.

The Bulldogs met the Broncos of Western Michigan University behind Riverview Elementary on April 6 for a doubleheader at Win Kellum Field in Big Rapids, and once April 7.

In the final game of the series, Ferris failed to quiet Western’s bats and fell 16–6. (more…)

Evolution of College Hockey

Ferris State to welcome the WCHA

After 33 years spent in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), Ferris State prepares to join one of the nation’s oldest college hockey conferences: the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA).

Ferris’ head coach Bob Daniels has 25 years of CCHA experience in the books, with 21 seasons spent as head coach of Ferris.

“[The CCHA] started off with a bunch of small schools and had a bunch of larger ones join,” Daniels said. “It was really a great relationship for all the schools. I think the benefits of it being a good, strong bus league was positive for everyone during that time of college hockey.” (more…)

Ferris State’s athletic director’s work paying off

For the last three seasons, Ferris State’s Athletic Director Perk Weisenburger and athletics staff have worked to improve Division I and II athletic programs at the university.

“We have outstanding strengths; our student athletes are part of that. I would attribute our success to the coaches that we have in our program and the expectations,” Weisenburger said. “Before my arrival, the expectation to just maintain the status quo may have permeated the department, and I’d like to hope that if I’ve done anything, I’ve established that we can do much more.”

Ferris State’s athletic program is considered the third best GLIAC program in the nation ranked by the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, and sits at 23rd in the nation. (more…)

 
 
 

Home Opener Delayed

Neutral site chosen for weekend's series of league doubleheaders

Ferris State’s home opener will be put on hold due to a field that remains unplayable impart to Big Rapids’ changing climate.

Ferris’ Lady Bulldogs will instead travel to Caledonia for a weekend of double-header action at Davenport University’s home field, the Famers Insurance Athletic Complex, March 29–30.

Ferris’ first conference twinbill of the weekend will begin league play for foe Lake Erie (2−8) March 29, at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. (more…)

Ferris State suffers heart break against Ohio State, prep for future

Ferris State unwillingly rests its legs after bowing out of the CCHA’s last quarterfinal playoff round.

Ferris State’s desire to keep the season alive was evident in a tight 3–2 loss March 17 that featured 49 Bulldog shots on net to the Ohio State Buckeyes’ 27.

“It obviously hurts right now. We all wanted to advance to Joe Louis and have a chance to win the last CCHA tournament ever. But it was not in the cards for us. I am proud of how we grew as a team and the guys left have a bright future,” Ferris’ senior captain Kyle Bonis said. (more…)

Bulldogs handle heart break in close series with Ohio State

Ferris State may reflect on their past seasons in the CCHA after Ohio State won game three of the last CCHA playoffs appearance.

“It’s tough to reflect on so quickly. But looking back at all the memories that have been made. The things we accomplished as a group, is something very special,” Ferris’ senior captain Kyle Bonis said, after asked about his experience at Ferris.

Split Series

Game three will test Bulldogs and Buckeyes will to win

One game stands between each team and their near equal desire to reach the CCHA’s semifinal playoff round at Joe Louis Arena in the league’s final season.

“Nobody wants this to end (on our team). Our play will reflect that,” senior captain Kyle Bonis said. “It will be a battle from start to finish.”

Ohio State sent the best-of-three series to the necessary third game of the series after defeating Ferris State 3–1 on March 16 in OSU Ice Rink at Columbus, Ohio. (more…)

 
 
 

Ferris Claims First Game

Justin DeMartino's back-to-back goals give Bulldogs boost over Buckeyes

Ferris State has a two-game opportunity to reach Joe Louis Arena and the semifinal playoff round of the CCHA’s last season.

The Bulldogs quelled the Ohio State Buckeyes in the first night of the CCHA Quarterfinal playoff round at Columbus, Ohio with a 4–2 victory, March 15.

Senior left wing Kyle Bonis gave the Bulldogs a 1–0 lead in the first period with a one-timer from the right circle that flew past Ohio State’s goaltender Brady Hjelle. (more…)

 
 

Three Make National Meet

Rudd's work ethic evident; earns National Championship

Three athletes from Ferris State were invited to attend the NCAA Division II National Championship meet in Birmingham, Ala.

Junior long distance runner Anna Rudd became the second women’s track and field member in Ferris history to earn a national championship title, March 8, after completing a 5000 meter run in 16:28.18 on a 200 meter banked course. She outran 18 other runners in the event’s field.

Had the track not been a banked 200 meter course, Rudd would have surpassed the record time, 16:28.71, held by former Ferris distance runner and 11-time All-American Tina Muir in a five kilometer event on a flat 200 meter track. (more…)
