Dressing Down

Don’t let the summer heat beat you down

by Published: Apr 26, 2012

Professional dress is something most of us have donned at least once in our college career, and I can only imagine how mutinous you must feel at the prospect.

To make matters worse, professional dress is horrible for summer weather. A full suit gets hot very fast and some minor businesses do not have air conditioning, not to mention Michigan, as many of us have experienced, can get very hot in the summer. (more…)

Good Professor vs. Bad Professor

Effective teachers will take time to help you learn

by Published: Apr 11, 2012

What makes a good professor different from a bad one in the eyes of Ferris State University students? Some professors never cancel class. Other professors have coursework due daily with a quiz the first five minutes of class.

And yes, I know a professor like this. He is smart, and he knows it. He can be condescending and likes to put students on the spot. I fear this professor. (more…)

Plug Into the Kindle

Saves time, energy and maybe a little money

by Published: Mar 23, 2012

Smelling the pages of musty old books is largely becoming a thing of the past as more and more students use technology to find their favorite books and their least favorite textbooks.

After a lot of subtle hinting to my boyfriend, he got me a Kindle as a present. Nothing fancy, just a standard one that will hold enough books for me to stay happy for quite awhile. I immediately filled it with all the cheapest books I could find, and one not so cheap one, a textbook.

I wanted to see how I would like using a Kindle to hold a textbook, and as it turns out it was pretty handy. I could look up words with its built-in dictionary and it was easy to use with the fancy-dancy touch screen. (more…)

Unlock Your Imagination

Drop the phone, step away from the keyboard and experience life firsthand

by Published: Mar 1, 2012

Television and Internet streaming has made our generation a nation of watchers, but not doers.

I remember playing outside a lot as a child, swinging and running down to the river with my puppy to watch the canoes go by. I would spend hours fighting off enemies and pretending I was a wood nymph. I have an active imagination and did not need to Google ideas like I had to do with this article. (more…)

Just for the Heck of It

Leave your potty mouth at home, please

by Published: Feb 17, 2012

It’s an amazing learning experience to walk around campus and learn five new swearwords before I arrive at my destination.

I am not a goody-two shoes when it comes to swearing. I learned a lot of swearwords when I was younger by listening to my dad’s buddies around the garage. I even swear when I stub my toe. But at least I use the word in the appropriate context. (more…)

Do a Double Take

by Published: Jan 27, 2012

Double standards are with us wherever we go, but do you really notice them in your everyday life?

I never noticed them before I left for college, now it is almost impossiable for me ignore them thanks to education.

Look at the entertainment industry, for example. Girl punches guy: comedy. Guy punches girl: abuse. Lesbians are hot, but gay couples are gross. If a guy sleeps around, he’s a sex god. If a girl does it, she’s a whore. (more…)

The Choice Is Yours

Saggy pants are unprofessional

by Published: Jan 18, 2012

Did you know “sagging” started in prison as a sign for a person’s availability for sexual relations with other inmates?

I hadn’t either until I heard this rumor on the Internet. I was so intrigued by this idea that I did a little research. According to snopes.com, this rumor is only half true. Sagging did start in prison, but not for any sexual reasons.  (more…)

Moving in With Your Significant Other

Is this the next step before marriage or just someone to help pay rent?

by Published: Dec 2, 2011

The most important time of our lives is upon us; many of us are choosing careers, dating more seriously and making decisions that will impact our future.

It is scary to think that the decisions you make now could impact your life forever, and this goes double for your dating life. (more…)

Cursive Writing to Be a Thing of the Past

We don’t need cursive writing anymore

by Published: Nov 18, 2011

Handwriting is something most college students avoid whenever possible, and now the public school system is making it even easier.

Many states are no longer requiring schools to teach cursive writing. This decision has been met with some controversy on the Internet. The older generation seems more hostile to the idea, while the younger generation is applauding. (more…)

Halls to Be Demolished

Plans include creating parking for the future student center

by Published: Nov 16, 2011

More changes are coming to Ferris’ campus. Carlisle and Masselink Halls are officially set to be demolished by August 2012.

The closing of these two halls is a result of Ferris’ master plan to move all housing to south campus. North campus will become more student activity orientated with the plans of renovating the Rankin Student Center. (more…)
