GVSU takes three-of-four in weekend series against FSU

While many stu­dents headed home for the hol­i­day week­end, the Bulldog soft­ball team stayed in Big Rapids to host division-rival Grand Valley State.

The Bulldogs were outscored 25–15 in a four-game series that the Lakers dom­i­nated, top­ping Ferris 3–1 in the series. (more…)

The end. Jim Morrison sang about it, Cormac McCarthy wrote about it and most reli­gions address it in scripture.

It’s some­thing that never comes to mind until it’s finally here. Maybe it’s because peo­ple are too afraid to address the final­ity of end­ing some­thing. Perhaps it’s the uneasi­ness that comes with hav­ing to fig­ure out what hap­pens next. Whatever the cause, humans are nat­u­rally reluc­tant to face the end. (more…)

 
 

Lady Bulldogs Notch 3rd Place Finish at Detroit Titans Invitational

The Lady Bulldogs con­tin­ued their recent stretch of top fin­ishes by fin­ish­ing third at the Detroit Titans Invitational.

Ferris tal­lied a three-round 1,006 score to secure a top-three fin­ish at the week­end tournament(April 11–12) that included five other com­pet­ing teams. Oakland University took home first-place hon­ors for team play.

The Bulldog effort was paced by fresh­man Jacqueline DeBoer, as she took home fifth-place(245, +30) for the week­end. Junior Blaize Baumgartner fol­lowed behind in sixth-place(246, +31). (more…)

While the sea­son may be over for the Bulldog hockey team, the num­ber of play­ers sign­ing with pro­fes­sional teams keeps on grow­ing as senior cap­tain Zach Redmond has signed with the Atlanta Thrashers of the NHL.

Redmond, who was drafted by Atlanta in 2008 in the sev­enth round (184th over­all) of the NHL Entry Draft, recently began play­ing for the Thrasher’s top affil­i­ate, the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League (AHL), after ink­ing with Atlanta on April 5. (more…)

Ferris men’s golf team notches top three finish at NCAA Regionals

While Purgatory is thought to be nei­ther good nor bad, it was pretty good to be there in the eyes of the Bulldog men’s golf team.

Ferris placed three golfers in the indi­vid­ual top 20 at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Tournament en route to a third-place fin­ish for the team. The Bulldogs shot a two-round score of 597 at the par 72, 7,268-yard Purgatory Golf Course at Noblesville, Ind, to fin­ish 21-strokes over par. The tour­na­ment hosted 25 teams for the 36-hole tour­na­ment on April 10–11. (more…)

With the snow melt­ing away and the sun finally mak­ing an appear­ance, the Bulldogs con­tin­ued their spring prepa­ra­tion with the first major scrim­mage of the year.

Ferris strapped on the hel­mets for its first scrim­mage of the spring ses­sion as the Bulldogs hit the mid­way point of spring ball. The Bulldogs took the field at Top Taggart Field on April 9 for the first time in front of the pub­lic this sea­son to show­case the work they’ve put in dur­ing the off­sea­son pro­gram. (more…)

Ferris should consider bringing back the baseball team

There are cer­tain indi­ca­tors that let you know that spring­time in Michigan is approach­ing. There is the con­stant com­plain­ing about the constantly-changing weather. The sight of peo­ple walk­ing around cam­pus with shorts on once the ther­mome­ter hits 45 degrees.

But while in class dur­ing Opening Day of the MLB sea­son, it was the waves of hats I saw sport­ing the old English “D” that reminded me that spring had finally arrived. (more…)

Justin Keenan just wanted to win a cham­pi­onship. That’s the one goal the senior cen­ter for the Bulldogs had dur­ing his col­le­giate bas­ket­ball career.

But while the Bulldogs fell short of that goal this year after an impres­sive run to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament this sea­son, Keenan will have to set­tle for fin­ish­ing his Bulldog career as one of the most pro­lific play­ers in GLIAC his­tory. (more…)

Bulldog senior Kyle Wittenbach shoots par at weekend tourney, team finishes 11th

Behind a season-best out­ing from senior Kyle Wittenbach, the Bulldogs’ men’s golf team placed 11th out of 25 teams at the NCAA-II Midwest Region Tournament II this weekend.

At the two-round tour­na­ment, which was held at the Cherry Blossom Golf Course at Georgetown, Ky., Wittenbach posted a score of 144 on the week­end to fin­ish tied for sec­ond with Wayne State’s Steve Fedewa and Casey Pyne from Lewis University. Thomas Hay from Drury University claimed the first-place hon­ors with a one-under par score of 143 in two rounds of play. (more…)

 
 

Keenan Named Division II Player of the Year

From the pre­sea­son to the post-season, Bulldog senior cen­ter Justin Keenan was the best  player in Division II col­lege basketball.

After being named the Division II Bulletin Preseason National Player of the Year, Keenan took home the Division II Bulletin National Player of the Year award on March 28.

In the first time in Ferris his­tory, a Bulldog player claimed the National Player of the Year award for the men’s bas­ket­ball pro­gram.
“This cul­mi­nates Justin’s out­stand­ing career and is a direct result of all the hard work and ded­i­ca­tion he’s made over the last four years,” said Ferris head coach Bill Sall.

Keenan, who became the GLIAC’s all-time lead­ing scorer this sea­son with 2,259 career points, ranks sec­ond in Ferris his­tory in career scoring.
