Where did long held Valentine’s Day icons come from?

Valentine’s Day has a long his­tory and many dif­fer­ent cus­toms and tra­di­tions that have evolved since the mark­ing of this roman­tic day.

It wouldn’t be right to talk about Valentine’s Day with­out talk­ing about Cupid. The lit­tle angel that has been known for caus­ing a romance or two is said to be the son of the god­dess of love Venus, accord­ing to Roman mythol­ogy. Venus sup­pos­edly sent Cupid out to shoot peo­ple with arrows since he was blessed with the abil­ity to make them fall in love. (more…)

Gunnar & the Grizzly Boys on a musical mission

Gunnar & the Grizzly Boys is a band that has “hit the ground run­ning” when it comes to expe­ri­enc­ing suc­cess with its music.

The band, which played at The Gate this past Saturday, is com­posed of six mem­bers, includ­ing Ferris stu­dent Rob Mason, who is a senior in the mechan­i­cal engi­neer­ing pro­gram. (more…)

In light of events that occurred this school year sur­round­ing the Delta Chi fra­ter­nity, a group of FSU stu­dents has decided to take action to make sure stu­dents get the three con­certs they are accus­tomed to.

A new orga­ni­za­tion formed by a group of Ferris stu­dents are ded­i­cated to putting on a show to replace January Jams, an annual con­cert event that is put on by the Delta Chi fra­ter­nity. (more…)

Holiday customs enhance seasonal happenings

Winter fes­tiv­i­ties and hol­i­days are filled with a rich his­tory of national, reli­gious, and fam­ily tra­di­tions that make cel­e­brat­ing dur­ing these snowy months that much more special.

There are cer­tain tra­di­tions that fam­i­lies prac­tice dur­ing the hol­i­days that have a long-standing his­tory. One such tra­di­tion is the Christmas tree, which has ori­gins that date back to 16th cen­tury Germany. The tree was looked at as a sym­bol of eter­nal life. Trees began get­ting dec­o­rated in the 17th cen­tury and were brought to America around the same time. (more…)

Event hopes to prevent unwanted sexual side effects

You Beautiful Black Women and Alpha Phi Alpha are team­ing up to get stu­dents’ atten­tion about the con­se­quences of reck­less sex.

The two orga­ni­za­tions are bring­ing speaker Maria Davis, HIV/AIDS aware­ness spe­cial­ist, to cam­pus to talk with stu­dents about HIV, STDs, and AIDS dur­ing the Sex in the City II Event. Davis suf­fers from the AIDS virus her­self and con­tracted it from her fiancé. After get­ting the virus, she decided to try to make a dif­fer­ence through edu­ca­tion. (more…)

FSU ensembles create music through hard work and dedication

The FSU Symphony Band and the FSU West Central Chamber Orchestra will con­tinue this month’s musi­cal mon­tage with two more concerts.

The band is com­prised of the largest num­ber of Ferris stu­dents it’s seen in many years. The orches­tra is also reach­ing record break­ing num­bers this fall with the largest num­ber of string play­ers it has ever had and the largest num­ber of par­tic­i­pat­ing Ferris stu­dents. (more…)

Autumn aLive 2010 brings coun­try artist Joe Nichols to Ferris State University as the head­liner for this year’s performance.

Ginell Narvaiz, 2010 Music Industry Management Association (MIMA) book­ing agent, explained the amount of work that goes into putting on a show as large as Autumn aLive. The show takes almost a full year to plan, includ­ing time spent dur­ing the sum­mer. (more…)

Ferris State stu­dents will get dra­matic this week with the pro­duc­tion of Hairspray pre­mier­ing tomor­row night.

“Hairspray is a good show and it just became avail­able,” said Katherine LaPietra, FSU the­atre pro­fes­sor and direc­tor of the pro­duc­tion. “A lot of stu­dents seem to like it and know it.” (more…)
