Dog Days

New dog park coming to Big Rapids

As part of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan re-done every five years, a recent sur­vey went out to the cit­i­zens about whether or not a dog park would be well received. After get­ting feed­back, a com­mit­tee was cre­ated to obtain per­mis­sion to pro­ceed with the dog park proposal.

Although the com­mit­tee is unsure at the moment about the date the park will open, Parks and Recreation is work­ing with the com­mit­tee and brochures have been sent out to pro­mote fundrais­ing, such as sell­ing bricks to get names engraved on.

“I think it is a good thing and a nice place for inter­ac­tion for dogs. It is bet­ter than just walk­ing on the road or on a leash all the time,” Stephanie Demarest, FSU senior in graphic design, said. (more…)

Ferris changes policy for on-campus housing

Roommates, The Rock Café and res­i­dence hall activ­i­ties are all great oppor­tu­ni­ties for stu­dents liv­ing on cam­pus; how­ever, some may want the expe­ri­ence of liv­ing off cam­pus as an option.

After receiv­ing obser­va­tions and con­cerns that most other state uni­ver­si­ties do not have this same age require­ment, Director of Housing and Residence Life Jon L. Shaffer said this has pro­vided an oppor­tu­nity to review the hous­ing pol­icy. (more…)

April 14 at 10 p.m., traf­fic stop for expired plate at State Street at South Street. Driver was arrested for not hav­ing a license and lodged in the county jail.

Suspended license

April 15 at 1:55 a.m., vehi­cle was stopped at Perry Street for reg­is­tra­tion plate vio­la­tion. Driver was found to be dri­ving on a sus­pended license. (more…)

Scott Barger’s need for speed began 10 years ago. He has since got­ten involved in both skate­board­ing and long­board­ing through­out the years.

Barger, an FSU junior in busi­ness admin­is­tra­tion, said one rea­son it’s become pop­u­lar in the last two years is because it’s fun, eas­ier and more con­ve­nient, while being a quick means of trans­porta­tion. Barger recently started an open Facebook group called FSU Longboarding in which stu­dents can get together and ride. (more…)

One Match

Be the Match helps patients get the marrow transplants they need

Every five min­utes some­one is diag­nosed with a form of blood can­cer, and even with a reg­istry of mil­lions, many patients can­not find a match.

Jennella Rykse, a Ferris junior in social work, orga­nized Be the Match in honor of bone mar­row trans­plan­ta­tion. Shortly after dat­ing her boyfriend, his dad was diag­nosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). MDS can develop into a fast-growing, severe leukemia called acute myel­oge­nous leukemia. Career Fair offers job preparation and tips

Eighty per­cent of all job open­ings aren’t adver­tised; most peo­ple get jobs through rec­om­men­da­tion. Three Career Fairs are hap­pen­ing through­out the week as a chance for stu­dents and alumni to meet future employers.

Ferris State University’s Career Services Spring 2012 Career Fair is held through­out the week of March 26–30. The com­mu­nity event is an oppor­tu­nity for stu­dents to learn skills that will pre­pare them for their future career. There are three Career Fairs dur­ing Career Week: Virtual Public Service Career Fair, Healthcare Career Fair and Business and Technology Career Fair. Many top employ­ers are par­tic­i­pat­ing in these events includ­ing Goodman, Enterprise, Buhler and Walbridge. (more…)
