Where’s Your Voice?

by Published: Feb 29, 2012

Signs saying “put the fair in Ferris” were held in protest of nontenure faculty members outside the Timme Center. Student debt forums were held by President Eisler and Board of Trustee members hosted special meetings to discuss future plans for campus facilities.

With tuition increases and facility management of constant concern for Ferris students, not one student voice was present to answer the Board of Trustees’ call for public opinion at its regular Finance Committee meeting Feb. 24. (more…)

Being Ourselves

by Published: Feb 22, 2012

This past weekend, the headlining act for FSU’s annual Ferris Fest concert was announced at the hockey game against Bowling Green.

No, it wasn’t Justin Bieber. It was a band by the name of “All Time Low.” Throughout the years, musicians who have performed on the Ferris Fest stage have either been met with rave reviews or a silent yawn. From Sean Kingston and Cartel, to Three Six Mafia, Anberlin and Mike Posner, Ferris students have plenty opinions on the choice for Ferris Fest headliners. (more…)

Each One Teach One

If you were one of the FSU students in attendance for Black Leaders Aspiring for Critical Knowledge and Student Government’s, “United We Stand, Divided We Fall” discussion, then you listened to a panel of students discussing topics such as event financing, diversity and campus outreach.

Though reactions were mixed and some discussions were intense, there lied a genuine need for collaboration and communication between each respective organization. (more…)

by Published: Feb 15, 2012

Those mysterious noises that go bump in the night across campus will be the topic of investigation for a team of Michigan ghost hunters.

Fast-food additives pose a health risk to our generation

According to an article by Food Safety News, McDonald’s recently announced it would no longer use ammonium hydroxide beef in its hamburgers. Referred to as a “pink slime” additive, the ammoniated beef was popularly used in school lunches and pet foods.

Taco Bell and Burger King reportedly have also agreed to no longer use the beef trimmings treated with ammonia and water. (more…)

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist M.L. Elrick gave two separate presentations on his role in uncovering former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s text message scandal, watchdog journalism and the future of news to FSU students and faculty.

“The reason why I like investigative journalism is because I believe you are entitled to the truth,” Elrick said. “We believe there are two sides to every story.” (more…)

Every Little Bit Counts

by Published: Feb 8, 2012

Last week I filled out a postcard in the Rankin Center at a table for the Military Support Group. The postcards were to be sent to the military men and women serving overseas.

Though the two military support group students, table of letters and students who signed the letters were small in number, I knew the significance of the gesture would be deeply appreciated. (more…)

Think Before You Ink

Visible tattoos still viewed as part of the counterculture

by Published: Feb 2, 2012

Tattooing has been an art form and means of expression throughout history. However, the trend of tattooing has taken on a whole new means of expression.

Colorful arm sleeves and elaborate back art are now replacing small tattoos. Areas once thought as forbidden for body ink are now acceptable places for marking. The idea of “it’s alright as long as no one sees it” has become a thought of the past. Facial tattoos, hand art and stretched earlobe plugs are part of a subculture influenced by self-expression and fashion. (more…)

Expanded Horizons

by Published: Feb 1, 2012

February is African-American history month and Ferris State University students and staff members are putting on events to acknowledge the achievements of Black Americans throughout history. These include discussions on the Black urban rebellions of the 1960’s, the story of the Greensboro four and a look into the social impact of Idlewild.

As a campus community made of students from different ethnic backgrounds and beliefs, college should be an opportunity to learn racial acceptance and become educated on the differences of others. (more…)

Not Busy, Just Nosey

Busy lives may be caused by distractions

by Published: Jan 27, 2012

A common phrase spoken by Ferris State University students is “I never have enough time.” For most college students, after the assignment deadlines and textbook reading, any spare time is spent resting up for the next day’s routine of rushing.

Though it appears either our days are getting shorter or our responsibilities are overwhelming, we cannot ignore the amount of time we spend consumed in the lives of others. (more…)
