Relay for Life kicks off

Ferris State University’s Colleges Against Cancer RSO will hold its kickoff event for Relay for Life Jan. 30 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the IRC.

Music, games and prizes, along with registration for relay teams, will be taking place.

Ferris State Athletics makes donation to Make-a-Wish

The Ferris State University and Northwood University Student-Athlete Advisory Committees came together to donate $5,000 to the Make-A-Wish foundation. The money was raised for Clark Crawford, a child of the Midland community, who is battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The check was presented Jan. 23 at the Ferris basketball game against Northwood.

Andy Warhol art exhibit opening in Big Rapids

The opening reception for the Andy Warhol Silver Clouds Exhibit will take place at Artworks in downtown Big Rapids on Feb. 1 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

As part of the celebration of Festival of the Arts 2014, the event is free to the public and light refreshments will be served.

The interactive exhibit creates an engaging and playful environment, combining light, air and movement.

Celebration of Black History Month begins

To celebrate Black History Month, the Office of Multicultural Student Services will be holding a series of events.

The first event, a movie screening of “Fruitvale Station” followed by a discussion, will take place at 6 p.m. on Feb. 3 in the Michigan College of Optometry auditorium (MCO 210).

This event is free and open to the public.

Students receive Martin Luther King Jr. awards

Ferris State University’s Office of Multicultural Student Services presented three students with 2014 MLK Legacy Awards.

Steven Balkema of Big Rapids, Bararkas Keyes of Flint, and Tamira Owens of Detroit were the award recipients based on their commitment to social responsibility in the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Professor Gloria Lukusa-Barnett also received an award for exemplifying social justice in her professional and personal life. The Diversity and Inclusion Office presented her with the “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Social Justice Award.”
