Women’s basketball makes up for overtime loss with thrilling victory

The Ferris State women’s basketball was able to take out Lake Superior State on Saturday, Jan. 25, to improve their GLIAC record to 6-6.

The 74-71 affair gave them an overall record of 6-8 for the beginning of the season, which in turn dropped the Lakers GLIAC record back to 4-8 and set their overall record to 4-14.

The Lakers held a lead for the first six minutes of the game but could not seem to keep up with the Bulldogs as they started to pull away.

Ferris held a big lead over Lake Superior State throughout almost the entire first half, going into half time with the score of 36-20.

The Bulldogs shot a 45.9 percent from the field, including 4-of-9 from three-point range, and made 14-of-17 free throws compared to the Lakers 43.1 percent from the field, 15-of-30 from three-point range, and 12-of-16 free throws.

Ferris had their largest lead in the second half at 16:58 with a lead of 25 points.

Senior guard, Sarah DeShone, paced the Bulldogs 20 points and eight assists to lead Ferris, while junior forward, Kara Hess, added 12 points.

Junior center, Hannah Hoffman, and sophomore forward April Watson combined for fifteen rebounds as the Bulldogs out-rebounded the Lakers 35-29.

Ferris fell into the trap of sitting pretty with a comfortable lead and nearly paid for it dearly.

Lake Superior State started to bring their game around 16:38 in the second half where they finally caught up to Ferris to tie the score (60-60) with 4:57 left in the half, erasing the massive Bulldog lead.

The Lakers could not seem to finish the game, leaving the Bulldogs with a win on their home court.

Ferris will face their next opponent on Thursday, Jan. 30, at Wayne State in Detroit, Michigan, with tip off at 6:00 p.m.
