Birkam announces influenza increase

Birkam Health Center announced in a campus wide notice tonight that Ferris is experiencing an increase of influenza illness.

If an individual becomes ill with influenza, Cande Price, RN and Clinic Coordinator, said the individual will experience a fever and respiratory symptoms that will last several days.

To keep from spreading the illness, Price advised sick students to stay in their room or home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone and keep away from others. Other home care recommendations in Price’s email include drinking plenty of clear fluids and frequent hand washing.

According to Price, individuals should seek emergency medical attention if they exhibit difficulty breathing, pain or pressure in the chest/abdomen, sudden dizziness, confusion or severe vomiting. In addition, if the flu-like symptoms seem to be improving but then return with a fever and worsened cough, she strongly advised seeking medical attention.

Students experiencing abnormal influenza side effects can contact Birkam at 231−591−2614. The health center is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
