“Stick-to-it-ness.”

According to Brandon Knap, Student Artist of the Month, this is the aspect of art that is hardest for him to master.

Knap, FSU sophomore in graphic design, has been drawing and doodling for as long as he can remember. Now he strives to match his natural talent with perseverance. (more…)

Drop the phone, step away from the keyboard and experience life firsthand

Television and Internet streaming has made our generation a nation of watchers, but not doers.

I remember playing outside a lot as a child, swinging and running down to the river with my puppy to watch the canoes go by. I would spend hours fighting off enemies and pretending I was a wood nymph. I have an active imagination and did not need to Google ideas like I had to do with this article. (more…)

Lor & The Intrigue: Mainline This!

Muskegon band Lor & The Intrigue take the sound of ‘80s hair metal and bring it to 2012. Solid mixes on all songs and especially detailed guitar work make this band stick out as an all-star rock n’ roll legend in the making. The lyrics lack a lot of depth, but instead the musicianship is focused on making the songs perfect and tight-knit little balls of awesomeness. (more…)

New airline program allows you to see who is on your next flight

Traveling on planes means you have to sit next to at least one stranger and possibly engage in awkward conversations with someone you don’t know.

A new program by Dutch airline KLM will allow you to get to know your fellow passengers using Facebook or LinkedIn profile details. The decision to share information will be up to each individual traveler to select what information goes public. (more…)

Be Careful This Spring Break

Hot tourist spots tend to have higher crime rates

by Published: Mar 1, 2012

We’ve spent the past eight weeks trying to survive through homework, meetings, presentations and snow just waiting for spring break.

I’ve been counting down the days until this care-free week and now it’s almost here. Anyone who can afford a trip away from the cold weather will probably be heading out of Big Rapids within the next few days. (more…)

by Published: Mar 1, 2012

It was recently announced that Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania has a vending machine in their health facility that provides Plan B contraceptives for students.

Plan B contraceptives, similar to the morning-after pill, are used after intercourse as an emergency measure to prevent pregnancy.

The vending machine has been on the campus for two years and hasn’t drawn significant controversy or media attention until recently. The machine is located in Shippensburg’s Etter Health Center, which is accessible to only students and faculty. (more…)

Fight for Your Rights

Ferris’ reluctance to bargain only hurts my education

by Published: Feb 29, 2012

I have two jobs. I work nearly 35 hours a week between the two of them. Before I was in school I worked full time. I know what it’s like to work in environments that don’t always seem fair, level or even remotely logical, but I do know about one thing several faculty members don’t: job security.

Even in my part-time positions I have more job security than that of a nontenured-track staff member here at Ferris. I have health insurance, life insurance, optical, dental and disability coverage. With good behavior and performance, I have full confidence I will still be employed six months from now.
