Words @ War: Should Class Have Been Cancelled Due to the Bomb Threat?

The way bomb threat situation was handled was irresponsible

by Published: Jan 19, 2012

When I first heard there was a bomb threat, I was waiting to receive a text message from Ferris’ text message emergency alert system.

I waited for it, and waited. Finally, at 12:12 p.m., the text message came through warning students of the threat. But wait, wasn’t the voicemail left around 8 a.m.? The fact that I received the text message more than four hours later concerns me. (more…)

Words @ War: Should Class Have Been Cancelled Due to the Bomb Threat?

Evacuating classrooms does not ensure student safety

by Published: Jan 19, 2012

A decision to cancel classes at Ferris State University during the recent bomb threat would have been an inappropriate method of ensuring campus security.

Shortly after being informed of the bomb threat via phone message at the Timme Center for Student Services’ Business Office, public safety officials began investigating campus buildings. After a complete investigation of campus buildings, university officials did not find any evidence of explosives nor did they receive any more communication regarding the bomb threat. How many times a day do you smile at someone?

“Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.”

A yellow piece of paper was taped to the table of the hostess stand with this saying written on it. I quickly read this as I waited to be seated at my table of the restaurant. (more…)

The Costly Truth

Consequences of furnishing alcohol to minors are not light

by Published: Jan 19, 2012

To many students, drinking seems to be a rite of passage in college life. In many circles, alcohol use is simply the norm. Yet, normal as it may seem, alcohol use can carry some very real consequences that many students may not understand.

A wide known fact is the legal age for drinking is 21. Anyone who drinks before this age can be convicted with a minor in possession charge (MIP), which can result in several hundreds of dollars in fines, probation and at maximum even jail time. (more…)

Ferris is racking up wins as they resume GLIAC play

The Bulldogs have compiled a 7–1 conference record up to this point of the season.

The Bulldogs came back to Big Rapids to face non-conference foe Urbana University on Jan. 11. Ferris’ defense kept Urbana under 50 points and forced them to shoot 30-percent from the field, while the Bulldogs went on to win 82–47. The game featured 10 steals, 48 rebounds, and 25 points scored off of turnovers for the Bulldogs. (more…)

Saggy pants are unprofessional

by Published: Jan 18, 2012

Did you know “sagging” started in prison as a sign for a person’s availability for sexual relations with other inmates?

I hadn’t either until I heard this rumor on the Internet. I was so intrigued by this idea that I did a little research. According to snopes.com, this rumor is only half true. Sagging did start in prison, but not for any sexual reasons.  (more…)

FSU students fawn over people they’ll probably never have

by Published: Jan 18, 2012

What does every FSU student have in common with a celebrity? Nothing. Chances are, most will never meet one, let alone have a relationship with one (though, considering the stability of celebrity relationships, maybe that’s a good thing). But they can dream, right? No matter how much Entertainment Tonight FSU students watch, most can admit to some sort of celebrity crush. (more…)
