Mysterious Faces

Artist gives only clues to those in his paintings

by Published: Apr 27, 2012

The current Rankin Art Gallery exhibit, “Visionaries and Malcontents,” features oil paintings with titles that give small hints to whom the paintings feature.

Thomas Post, creator of the paintings and professor of painting and fine arts at Kendall College, doesn’t want people to easily identify who’s who.

“I didn’t want to lay it out there; I just give little clues—just a sound bite in the title to make it more intriguing,” Post said. “People ask me all the time who are in my paintings. When you’re given the answer all the time, it’s easy to pass through. I want people to see the layers.” (more…)

Double Duty

Bulldogs batting order given boost this year

by Published: Apr 26, 2012

Not many teams can say that the player with the most RBI’s and the second-best batting average on the team also pitches.

Sophomore FSU pitcher and designated hitter Amy Dunleavy has been given the chance to effect both the offense and defense this year.

Before Dunleavy arrived at Ferris, she batted and pitched regularly for Canton High school in Canton, Mich. Though during her freshman year at Ferris, Dunleavy took a year off from hitting to focus on her pitching and make adjustments. (more…)

Softball team hitting on all cylinders

Six games were played this week for FSU’s softball team, and they came away looking better than ever before. This past Wednesday the team traveled to Northwood University for a two-game set, and the Bulldogs ended up winning them both by the scores of 6–3 and 13–5, which ended up in a mercy rule in the fifth inning. After the Bulldogs had to postpone April 20 matches against Saginaw Valley State University because of weather, they took on the Cardinals in four straight games spanning two days. (more…)

Dressing Down

Don’t let the summer heat beat you down

by Published: Apr 26, 2012

Professional dress is something most of us have donned at least once in our college career, and I can only imagine how mutinous you must feel at the prospect.

To make matters worse, professional dress is horrible for summer weather. A full suit gets hot very fast and some minor businesses do not have air conditioning, not to mention Michigan, as many of us have experienced, can get very hot in the summer. (more…)

What’s better than student art? How about student art that’s gets you from point A to point B?

Emily Noffsinger, Ferris sophomore in graphic design and this month’s Rankin Art Gallery Student Artist of the Month, is on a roll with artistic expression, creating original longboards.

Noffsinger began the process as a senior in high school, when an advanced placement class required her to turn in a concentration, or 12 pieces of related art. Knowing Noffsinger would be pursuing a degree in graphic design, her teacher suggested her student create a company. Noffsinger would start by making a logo and then create the actual boards. For five bucks, a new website can provide you some novel social services

by Published: Apr 26, 2012

If you’re lonely and need some social interactions, a new web service can help. GirlfriendHire allows girls to offer their “services” online, such as being your Facebook girlfriend, sending you a text message or writing on your Facebook wall.

But not all offers involving fake relationships include teaching you how to use your iPhone, create a playlist of dubstep music, or help proofread a homework assignment, all for five dollars. (more…)
