by Published: Mar 19, 2012

The Ferris State Hockey team will continue on their journey this year in the tournament as the second seed pick of the Midwest Regional.

The Bulldogs waited for their fate Sunday March 18 to see if this year they would participate in the NCAA Division I Frozen Four Tournament. This will be only the second time that the Bulldogs have been selected for the NCAA tournament.

First game of the tournament will be against third seed Denver on March 23 in Green Bay, Wis. If victorious, the Bulldogs will faceoff on Saturday against the winners of the Michigan-Cornell game. At 5:30 p.m. Ferris has tickets available at the box office for fans interested in following the team this weekend.

In case of disaster, Facebook will let everyone know you’re safe

by Published: Mar 15, 2012

When disaster strikes, everyone wants to know the affected people they love are safe. With a new pilot program instituted in Japan, Facebook is helping making that possible.

Facebook’s disaster feature will allow users to “Like” to signify their safety post-natural disaster. This comes around the one year anniversary of the earthquake and ensuing tsunami that hit Japan and accounted for over 15,000 deaths and another 3,287 people missing. (more…)

Torch Music Review

Retro review edition

by Published: Mar 15, 2012

This week I’d like to take the time to remember someone in music who was recently lost. I would like to take this week to remember Davy Jones, singer and heart throb of The Monkees.

The Monkees hit the scene in 1966 for a hit British television series that brought us such tunes as “Day Dream Believer” and “I Wanna Be Free.” With a pop-rock sound that took the world by storm, the Monkees drew in a waiting and enthralled audience. (more…)

NYPD caught spying on Muslim students

by Published: Mar 15, 2012

The Associated Press recently ran a story about the New York Police Department keeping tabs on various Muslim student organizations across the North-East. Several universities across the country have been affected including Yale and the University of Pennsylvania.

The NYPD tries to defend their actions by claiming they are merely trying to thwart terrorist attacks against the United States. They even claim their espionage campaigns against American Muslims have helped catch potential terrorists. Maybe it has; spy on enough people for a long enough time and you’re bound to find some of them wrapped up in illegal activity. (more…)

Johnston, line mates, combine for team leading offensive line

by Published: Mar 15, 2012

A fire was lit beneath senior forward Jordie Johnston during his last season as a Bulldog that has led to him leading Ferris’ roster in scoring output.

Johnston doesn’t remember a time where he wasn’t on the ice. He began skating at about the age of two and started playing organized hockey at the age of five.

As a Saskatchewan native, Johnston grew up playing hockey on his farm. His father built a backyard rink for Jordie and his brothers. (more…)

Memorable Season for the Bulldogs

FSU falls in the second round of the tournament

by Published: Mar 14, 2012

Entering the NCAA Division II tournament for only the fourth time ever in school history, the Lady Bulldogs looked to prove something as they came in with the No. 2 seed in the Midwest region.

Sophomore guard Sarah DeShone knew it was going to be a big step in the program and said, “[The tournament] is a great experience, and this was our chance to prove something.”

On tap for the Bulldogs in the first round was Drury (Mo.) College who had earned the No. 7 seed in the same region on March 9. (more…)

Changes to Kronos Policies

by Published: Mar 14, 2012

With many students being caught falsifying their hours, Ferris is looking to adopt new policies to better guard against similar actions.

A new policy is now in place for Kronos, the on-campus software used to record student employees’ hours. The new policy will prevent students from logging hours from off-campus computers.

In the beginning stages, everything did not go as planned as this new policy caused many employees of Ferris at off-campus sites to encounter problems. Because of these problems in the system, the system has been returned to its previous state. (more…)

Is competitive running the healthiest choice for children?

by Published: Mar 14, 2012

It’s not a good feeling to be passed in a race by a child.

I was recently running a 5k race and was feeling pretty good about my progress until I looked down and realized a five or six year old child and her mother were quickly dashing past me.

Needless to say, my confidence in my running ability was shot down the drain as I discovered my accomplishment of running this race was attainable by the younger counterparts of our society. (more…)
