National Drug Take-Back Day

The Drug Enforcement Administration is work­ing with loca­tions across Michigan to pro­vide peo­ple with a safe way to dis­pose of old, unwanted pre­scrip­tion drugs.

The ser­vice is free and anony­mous with no ques­tions asked. On Saturday, April 28 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., old and unwanted drugs can be dropped off at one of the fol­low­ing Big Rapids sites: Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office, 225 South Stewart St.; Big Rapids Department of Public Safety, 435 N. Michigan Ave.; and Ferris’ Department of Public Safety, 1319 Cramer Circle.

Mecosta County Community & Family Expo

The Mecosta County Community & Family Expo will have var­i­ous activ­i­ties avail­able for families.

The expo is set to take place on Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. — 2 p.m. at Big Rapids Middle School, 500 North Warren Ave. Some of the activ­i­ties include face paint­ing, safety city, hands-on games, car seat clinic appoint­ments and Michigan Child ID.

There will also be over 100 booth dis­plays, mini demo work­shops, local area enter­tain­ment and children’s activ­i­ties. Live enter­tain­ment will include Mecosta County local tal­ent Big Rapids Middle School Choir mas­cot dance-off.

All activ­i­ties are free and open to the public.

Take Back the Night

The pur­pose of the Take Back the Night march is to raise aware­ness of vio­lence against women, specif­i­cally domes­tic vio­lence, sex­ual assault, sex­ual harass­ment and stalking.

The march is set to take place on Thursday, April 19 and will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the IRC Connector and will end at State Street at Williams Auditorium, where the keynote pre­sen­ta­tion will take place at 7 p.m.

The pre­sen­ta­tion is titled “No Zebras, No Excuses.” Steve Thompson will be the pre­sen­ter. Thompson works with the Sexual Aggression Peer Activities Program at Central Michigan University.

Today, stu­dents are also invited to stop in the north quad between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to help cre­ate the “These Hands are Not for Hurting” ban­ner, which sig­ni­fies a promise from some­one to not use their hands in a vio­lent manner.

Interim chem­i­cal hygiene offi­cer appointed

Brad McCormick, an asso­ciate pro­fes­sor in the College of Allied Health & Sciences, has been appointed as interim chem­i­cal hygiene officer.

McCormick is cur­rently chair of the Hazardous Substance Awareness & Compliance Committee. McCormick will remain as interim offi­cer until a per­ma­nent, full-time offi­cer is hired.
