Men’s golf fin­ishes in sec­ond place

Ferris State University men’s golf team fin­ished only one stroke behind the first place fin­ish­ers Loyola University. The golf team fin­ished up with a score for the three-day tour­na­ment with a total of 866 as Loyola University scored an 865. Sophomore Trent Davidson, who hails from Rockford, led the Bulldogs as he fin­ished up in fifth place over­all in the event with a total score of 214. Other solid per­for­mances by the Bulldogs included senior Kyle Wittenbach with a final score of 214 for the tour­na­ment, plac­ing him in sev­enth place over­all, and senior Garret Simons, who shot a 220 which placed him 15th over­all in the event. The Bulldogs’ next con­test is April 21–22 at the Ashland Invitational.

Cleaning up LSSU with a sweep

The FSU soft­ball team took to the field against GLIAC oppo­nent Lake Superior State University this past week and the played hard, com­ing away with a con­vinc­ing sweep against the Lakers. The Bulldogs took game one in the series with a 9–0 pound­ing of the Lakers and con­tin­ued it in game two with a blowout vic­tory of 7–1. The dou­ble header notches two impres­sive wins for FSU and the stand­out at bat was senior Lindsey Pettit, who hit a grand slam for the Bulldogs to add insult to the first game. The Lakers man­aged to sneak away with only one hit against junior pitcher Dana Bowler for the entire game. During the sec­ond game, the Lakers put up more of a fight as each team tal­lied seven total hits, but the Bulldogs made them count by putting up seven runs com­pared to the Lakers’ one. Next on tap for FSU is a road two-game com­pe­ti­tion against Northwood University on April 18.

Taylor Nelson earns goalie hon­ors for Bulldogs

Senior net­min­der Taylor Nelson earned the Gongshow Goalie of the Month award this past week­end, which is awarded to the best goalie in col­le­giate hockey every month. Nelson was a crit­i­cal piece in FSU’s run to the title game in the Frozen Four as he had four vic­to­ries in the final month and accom­plished a 2.33 goals against aver­age and a .917 save per­cent­age. In the NCAA tour­na­ment, Nelson was dom­i­nant as he aver­aged giv­ing up 1.00 goals against with an out­stand­ing .959 save per­cent­age to lead all goalies. Nelson faced 64 shots in the national semis and he came away with 60 saves in two games. This marks the first time Nelson has ever earned this award in his phe­nom­e­nal career. n
