Bulldogs beat Union, in first-ever national title game

The Bulldogs will stay in Tampa, Fl. until April 7 for their first-ever NCAA Division I National Championship title game.

Ferris State University defeated Union College 3–1 April 5 in Tampa, Fl. in the NCAA Division I Frozen Four.

The first period went score­less, with Ferris State out­shoot­ing Union 7–6. The score remained tied up until the 12:04 mark of the sec­ond period. Union’s Daniel Carr scored the first goal for the Dutchmen.

Union College held a one goal lead over the Bulldogs until Ferris junior for­ward Kyle Bonis and Ferris senior for­ward Aaron Schmit com­bined to tie the game up 1–1 dur­ing a Bulldog power play. Schmit was cred­ited with the goal off of Bonis’ assist.

The Bulldogs pulled away from Union in the final period of the game. Bonis net­ted his 19th goal of the sea­son off of an assist from senior defense­man Brett Wysopal for a 2–1 lead.

Union College pulled their goalie with less than two min­utes left in the third period. Schmit went on to score his sec­ond goal of the game on Union’s empty net with 55 sec­ond left in the game, secur­ing a spot in the national title game for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs out­shot Union, 37–28. Senior Bulldog goal­tender Taylor Nelson made 27 saves in the game, improv­ing his record to 21−6−3 this season.

Ferris improved to 26−11−5 overall.

The Bulldogs will face Boston College in the national title game on April 7 at 7 p.m. in Tampa. The game can be watched on ESPN2.
