Bulldogs beat Union, in first-ever national title game
The Bulldogs will stay in Tampa, Fl. until April 7 for their first-ever NCAA Division I National Championship title game.
Ferris State University defeated Union College 3–1 April 5 in Tampa, Fl. in the NCAA Division I Frozen Four.
The first period went scoreless, with Ferris State outshooting Union 7–6. The score remained tied up until the 12:04 mark of the second period. Union’s Daniel Carr scored the first goal for the Dutchmen.
Union College held a one goal lead over the Bulldogs until Ferris junior forward Kyle Bonis and Ferris senior forward Aaron Schmit combined to tie the game up 1–1 during a Bulldog power play. Schmit was credited with the goal off of Bonis’ assist.
The Bulldogs pulled away from Union in the final period of the game. Bonis netted his 19th goal of the season off of an assist from senior defenseman Brett Wysopal for a 2–1 lead.
Union College pulled their goalie with less than two minutes left in the third period. Schmit went on to score his second goal of the game on Union’s empty net with 55 second left in the game, securing a spot in the national title game for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs outshot Union, 37–28. Senior Bulldog goaltender Taylor Nelson made 27 saves in the game, improving his record to 21−6−3 this season.
Ferris improved to 26−11−5 overall.
The Bulldogs will face Boston College in the national title game on April 7 at 7 p.m. in Tampa. The game can be watched on ESPN2.
