FSU men’s tennis team starts off strong in GLIAC play

by Published: Mar 29, 2012

Rolling in the GLIAC, the Ferris State University men’s tennis team swept this weekend’s matches against Tiffin University and Findlay University to stroll to 4–0 in conference play.

This past Friday the Bulldogs traveled to Ohio to take on the Tiffin University Dragons and came away with an outstanding victory.

The Bulldogs swept the Dragons in all matches to take the overall game by a 9–0 score. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was senior Oriol Vidal Cortes as he won his match in two straight sets 6–0, 6–1. The other single winners for the Bulldogs were freshman Laurent Galarneau, senior Jack Swan, senior Steven Roberts, sophomore Otto Keresztes and junior Razven Mag.

The doubles matchups were no different as the Bulldogs topped three doubles teams, destroying the Dragons and catapulting the Bulldogs to a 9–0 win at Tiffin University.

Senior player Justin Hermes said, “It was a good team win over the weekend, we expect to beat teams like that.”

Next on tap for the Bulldogs was the Oilers of Findlay University and another early conference road matchup went right for the Bulldogs, as they cleaned up the Oilers by a total match score of 8–1 and swept the weekend.

With the win, FSU has a 9–5 overall record and a 4–0 GLIAC conference record. The only loss of the match for FSU was a doubles match-up by the final score of 8–6.

A key player in this win was Galarneau as he took out the number one matchup in three sets by beating Kyle Collette 6–3, 6–7, 10–5.

Going 17–1 in this weekend’s matchups is nothing short of terrific, because on the road in conference play anybody can beat anybody on any given day, so the optimism on the courts is high.

This weekend’s success wasn’t an individual effort, by any means, as Hermes pointed out, “I’d like to give a shout out to Otto Keresztes and Razvan Mag for their play as of late.”

Next on tap for FSU is a home matchup against conference opponent Northwood University on March 28 as they look to keep their undefeated conference mark intact against the Timberwolves.

With the strong start in GLIAC play, the Bulldogs have high hopes for their 2012 campaign.

As for the rest of the season, Hermes states that the team’s goals remain the same.

“We want to win the GLIAC and eventually get into the NCAAs,” Hermes said.

The Bulldogs are certainly off to a strong start to accomplishing their goals and hope to take the next step against Northwood University on March 28 at the FSU Racquet and Fitness
Center at 4 p.m. n
