Bringing Rap to B-Rap

Kappa Showkase brings different music genre to campus

by Published: Mar 29, 2012

The same event that brought you Wiz Khalifa in 2010 is now bringing Nipsey Hussle and Dusty Mcfly for its third annual show.

A previous Kappa Showkase, hosted by the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, had a great turnout with rapper Wiz Khalifa. He played to a sold-out venue at Williams Auditorium.

“The concert was crazy,” Eric Andrews, Ferris State University senior in mechanical engineering and chair for the event, said. “Wiz Khalifa bought a Ferris State hoodie from the bookstore and wore it on stage. People went nuts.”

This year’s performer, Nipsey Hussle, is a rapper from Los Angeles. He has worked with big name artists such as Drake, Snoop Dogg, Soulja Boy and Chamillionaire.

The other headlining act for the event is Dusty Mcfly, a Detroit artist who has performed with the likes of Mike Posner and Big Sean.

Other acts at this year’s show include D. Nice and B. Lewie from Western Michigan University and Pasha from Flint. D. Nice and B. Lewie have a free download available of their single “Chill on Me” available on bandcamp.com. The event is being hosted by Michigan State University’s Tim City.

“The concert was started in order to give students a time to relax and have a good time,” Andrews said. “There aren’t too many hip hop or R&B or rap concerts in Big Rapids. We wanted to bring a different genre to campus.”

Kappa Showkase initially started as a talent show for students, but is now headlined by major artists in the industry, Andrews explained. This year it is more of a concert with a few opening acts.

“The event used to take place in Williams Auditorium, but the crowd got too big,” Andrews said. “Plus it’s the wrong style of atmosphere for a concert.”

The Kappa Showkase takes place March 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Wink Arena. Tickets are $5 for Ferris students and $10 for all others and are available at the Wink Arena Box Office. For more information about the event, contact Andrews at andrewe3@ferris.edu.
