The Ferris State University women’s volleyball team nearly shutout every team they faced this past weekend.

FSU is now 4–0 to start the season after hosting the Ferris State Invitational Sept. 2 and 3. The team only dropped a single set in 13 sets over Labor Day Weekend.

The Bulldogs swept three schools in the tournament. Drury (Mo.), Southern Indiana, and California (Pa.) all fell to FSU by a 3–0 decision. The only opponent to challenge the Bulldogs’ defense was Wisconsin-Parkside, though FSU still defeated them 3–1. (more…)

I don’t smoke, but I do stand up for rights

by Published: Sep 7, 2011

College campuses are littered with students, citizens of the community, visitors, and faculty members, all people with their own right to decide to smoke or not.

But more and more universities across the country have decided people don’t have the privilege to light up a cigarette or tobacco product on their campus.

I understand a private institution may establish such a rule. It is their private property that they can dictate as they please. Public universities and colleges do not own the same justification. (more…)

Smoking is not cool anymore; Smoke-free policy is a must; You make me sneeze

by Published: Sep 7, 2011

Smoking is absolutely unnecessary on a college campus. I would love to see some sort of committee willing to walk around Ferris politely asking those smoking to stop. Smoking is a choice you get to make for yourself, but the decision to smoke will never just affect your life. It will affect everyone and everything you encounter, plus it will also make you ugly and age faster than you have ever imagined. You will also need lots of Febreze because you will be smelly.

I hold my breath every time I encounter a smoker and avoid them when I can help it. I have used other entrances to buildings on campus just because a smoker was within the “proper distance” from the front of a building. (more…)

So long, CCHA! Ferris State University has accepted an invitation to join the WCHA (Western Collegiate Hockey Association) beginning in the 2013–2014 season.

Due to the creation of the new Big Ten hockey conference, which took University of Michigan, Michigan State University, University of Wisconsin, Ohio State University and University of Minnesota from the WCHA and the CCHA (Central Collegiate Hockey Association,) the WCHA extended invitations to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, Bowling Green State University, Lake Superior State University, Western Michigan University and FSU to join the WCHA. On Sept. 11, 2001, the lives of many were altered forever.

Now, ten years later, Ferris students look back on where they were on that tragic, historic day.

“I remember them telling us to go home,” said Quillian Murphy, a sophomore in psychology. Murphy said he and his classmates were not exactly sure what was going on. (more…)

The auditorium was silent as everyone waited to see what he would say.

“Photographer.” The student’s eyes widened with disbelief. Craig Karges had just read his mind.

Moments later, with the help of randomly selected members of the audience, Karges made a table levitate, moved a block of wood with his mind, and wrote on a chalkboard without touching it. (more…)

Every nine seconds in the U.S. a woman is assaulted or beaten. An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year.

WISE stands for “Women’s Information Service Inc.,” a domestic violence and adult sexual assault service program.

The organization serves Mecosta, Osceola, and Newaygo counties. WISE Shopper is a local nonprofit store in downtown Big Rapids that gives what profit they earn from sales to WISE, a local women’s shelter. WISE provides safety, support, and advocacy services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. (more…)

With the 10th anniversary of 9/11 approaching, this is a good time to reflect on the opportunities the armed forces and civil servicemen have given our country.

Many Ferris students can still remember where they were the morning they watched the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. I still remember sitting in a classroom watching the news coverage of the plane crashing into New York City’s North Tower. Students sitting alongside me in the classroom that day watched puzzled, waiting for our teacher to explain how this event would impact history. (more…)

As the 2011-12 school year begins, so does Kappa Kappa Psi, a new music fraternity/ registered student organization on campus.

The RSO existed on Ferris’ campus for a couple of decades, but disappeared in the early 1990s due to the music program and the entire university taking a major financial hit. Progress toward getting the group formulated again was brought about by Ferris students. (more…)
