No Coverage

Having no health insurance is a true pain

by Published: Dec 9, 2011

Like millions of Americans, I no longer have any type of health insurance. I found this out when I had to pay for some prescriptions out of pocket.

One prescription cost over $300, which I was not able to afford. Another one cost $30 that I had to pay for out of pocket. I was not pleased when I discovered this. (more…)

College Lessons

The ups and downs of college make us who we are today

by Published: Dec 9, 2011

This is my fourth year of college and my second year while attending Ferris.

In all of my semesters studying at a higher education level, I can honestly say this has been my toughest one. But, because of how difficult this semester has been, I have overcome some of the biggest challenges throughout my career, encountered numerous “learning experiences” and hopefully have become a better individual. Winning Is Everything

Former head football coach Jeff Pierce failed to show FSU the money

by Published: Dec 8, 2011

He wasn’t dismissed for ignoring reports of child molestation. He wasn’t given the boot for violating NCAA law. For the first time in what seems like a very long time (considering the scandals that dominate ESPN), a coach was fired for just plain losing. (more…)

Comedian W. Kamau Bell gets students talking about racism

by Published: Dec 8, 2011

It’s not everyday students attending a school function hear the “n-word,” much less coming from the stage.

However, those who attended 5-star comedian W. Kamau Bell’s presentation on Dec. 1 in Williams Auditorium were in for a surprise. His candid speech and frank discussion about race kept students laughing, but also forced them to confront some touchy topics. (more…)

Stop Online Piracy Act is poised to damage the internet

by Published: Dec 8, 2011

The Internet the world has come to know today may become a lot more restricted if HR 3261 is passed.

House Resolution 3261 is also known as the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). Representative Lamar Smith of Texas introduced the bill.

The bill, if signed into law, would expand the abilities of the legal system to fight the theft of intellectual properties by going after websites found to be hosting such content. (more…)

Homeless, but Not Helpless

Shelters for men are a necessity in Big Rapids

by Published: Dec 8, 2011

I recently saw an older gentleman holding a sign in Big Rapids labeled “Hungry, will work for food.” While this wasn’t the first time I had come across the stranger, his reoccurrences throughout the city had become of concern to me. As I began to ask local business owners within the city, a number of them also reported seeing homeless men frequently visiting their establishments. (more…)
