Changes to fall commencement ceremony

by Published: Sep 23, 2011

This year’s fall commencement ceremony will require tickets for admission.

According to Administrative Assistant to the Associate Vice President Sherry Hayes, this new requirement was put in place for the convenience of guests attending graduation.

“We want everyone to be able to sit down and enjoy the ceremony. Last December, we had standing room only in one of the ceremonies; therefore, we’ve decided we need to monitor it more closely,” Hayes said. (more…)

With a conference switch looming, Ferris State University students are eager to give their opinion on the future of the FSU men’s ice hockey team.

The new WCHA (Western Conference Hockey Association) extended an invitation to FSU to join the conference beginning in the 2013–14 season. By accepting, FSU will be leaving the CCHA (Central Collegiate Hockey Association).

But what does the switch mean for fans? (more…)

Should attendance be mandatory in college courses?

by Published: Sep 23, 2011

There are many reasons college students should attend class: to learn, get used to a rigorous schedule, and meet new people.

But that doesn’t mean class should be mandatory for students. The one thing that should never be taken away from students is their choice. Much of what a student learns in college is not necessarily learned in class. Students learn many life lessons, become responsible and truly get to know who they are outside of class. Should attendance be mandatory in college courses?

by Published: Sep 23, 2011

A required attendance policy should remain required by professors at Ferris State University.

For most students at Ferris, their first day of class began with a syllabus stating a required attendance policy. The current educational models in college classrooms are often structured to prepare students for professional environments. This is evident in the amount of group work, internship requirements and mandatory attendance policies degree programs incorporate. (more…)

Littering is having a worse impact than you think

by Published: Sep 22, 2011

I enjoy taking walks and viewing the beauty nature has to offer us. I look at the flowers, the trees, a Reese’s wrapper, and a Bud Light can.

Yes, I meant to include the candy wrapper and the beer can. These items are just as common to see outside as the dandelions and the oak trees. We live in a time and day when it’s nothing out of the ordinary to see our trash spewed across the ground. (more…)

Primus– Green Naugahyde

Released earlier this month (and for free if you Facebook liked the Southpark page), Primus gave the world another great album to tune out the world to. Listening to the new album lets you realize that even though the songs are different, the formula is still the same: Les Claypool. Take the Claypool out of Primus and you wouldn’t have Primus. You can’t hear hardly anything else other than thumping base throughout this whole album, and it makes you want to turn the world off around you and just relax. The album is fantastic, but that only leads into another question: wasn’t there another critically acclaimed bassist that released a new album with his band this year? (more…)
