“Don’t Stop Believin’”

Spiritual exploration fair will give students an opportunity to explore various opportunities

by Published: Sep 9, 2011

College offers students various opportunities of involvement; some find their place in registered student organizations, others join sports teams, and some attend parties.

Still, some find that those things aren’t enough.

“Typically students at this stage of their life are seeking avenues to find meaning and purpose, especially as it relates to enhancing self-understanding, preparing for healthy citizenship, answering life’s big questions, and finding calm and centeredness in times of stress,” said Dean of Student Life Leroy Wright. Many changes have taken place within the residence halls since last spring. From the removal of room telephones to the different location of the housing office, Director of Housing Dr. Jon Shaffer believes all of these changes are positive for the university.

Each year, students who live in the residence halls are surveyed about their location living satisfaction. The Office of Housing looks at the data collected to better satisfy students living in the halls. (more…)

From the Ice to the Gridiron

Is football the new hockey?

by Published: Sep 9, 2011

It was great to be at a football game and not be wishing for hockey season.

Junior running back Skyler Stoker’s go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter was as thrilling as any third period goal I’ve ever seen. Sorry, Zach Redmond. The hard hits of junior linebackers Tayo Moss and Alex Brajak rivaled those witnessed at Ewigleben Ice Arena. The only thing missing was the glass to slam their opponents into. (more…)

Speak Up, Seek Help

Be aware of the signs of suicide

by Published: Sep 9, 2011

I’m writing about something not many people like to talk about, and that subject is suicide.

This week is Suicide Awareness Week, according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Why would I write a column about this often-taboo topic? Well, it’s important to be aware of. Every 40 seconds, someone in the world dies by suicide. (more…)

Apprecation for college hindered by tuition

by Published: Sep 8, 2011

The start of the school year has arrived with moving in, new roommates, old friends, welcome week, new classes, new professors, and the one thing everyone wants to forget about, that tuition bill.

I can probably speak for most college students here; they dread that large tuition bill. Like most students we moan and groan about how tuition rises each year and how it is so expensive. Tuition in some ways has increased to it’s extremes. (more…)

Reluctant Athlete to All-American

Tina Muir takes place among FSU greats

by Published: Sep 8, 2011

What once-reluctant adolescent runner became an All-American athlete? What may sound like a Hollywood script has in fact happened at Ferris State University.

When Tina Muir began running competitively in middle school, she wasn’t fond of the sport. However, encouraged by friends and coaches, she stuck with it.

Tina, who is entering her senior season, is widely regarded as one of FSU’s all-time great cross country and track runners. The St. Albans, United Kingdom, native acknowledged the distinction as a “great honor” but only after letting out a modest chuckle. (more…)

The Ferris State University women’s soccer team kicked off the 2011 campaign with a similar start to the season as last year’s opener.

FSU traveled to Indianapolis, Ind., Friday to challenge the Indianapolis Greyhounds. The Bulldogs suffered a 1–0 loss. Sophomore goalie Rachel McCollum stayed in net for the entire 90 minutes and made two saves for FSU. (more…)

Driving Blind

Engineers make cars suitable for the blind

by Published: Sep 8, 2011

The blind may be ready to take to the streets with much more than a walking cane with a red tip.

Engineer Dennis Hong wants to change the world, by introducing a car suitable for the blind, which to me sounds incredibly insane.

I think everyone’s first thought is “What? Are you crazy?” This was my first thought as well, but after reading his articles and watching his video presentations I realized that creating an unthinkable piece of technology may actually be possible, though it still seems insane. (more…)
