Checking Out College

Event for high school students to be held again

by Published: Mar 30, 2011

High school students have the opportunity to get a sneak peek at college life at Education Exploration.

Amanda Kettlewell, a senior secondary education major, who is helping coordinate the event, said they invite many local high school students to come check out the registered student organizations and see what else is available on campus.

She said the purpose of the event is to get high school students to understand they can go to college. The event was also held last year; Kettlewell said it was very successful.

Education Exploration will allow visiting high school students to learn about college life and allow them to find out what kinds of opportunities college has to offer. She hopes a lot of people will participate this year like they did last year.

“It’s a chance for students to ask questions and get a perspective on things they may not have realized and see what it’s like to be in school,” said Kettlewell.

Kettlewell said there were quite a few students who attended the event last year and she is hoping for a good turnout this year. She said there were about five or six different high schools that attended.

The event is going to be held at Wink Arena where booths will be set up by various RSOs on campus. Students will be able to go to each booth and ask questions about Ferris, RSOs, on-campus and general questions about college life.

Activities include scavenger booths, where students are sent on a scavenger hunt to each RSO booth and a raffle will be included as well. The booths are set up for students to ask questions about the RSOs and other aspects of Ferris and campus life.

Education Exploration is set for Friday, April 15. The event will start at 8 a.m. and will last until 3 p.m. depending on local schools’ time schedules.

Kettlewell said they try to get as many RSOs involved as possible in this event as it is a good chance for students to find out not only what Ferris has to offer, but also what true benefits college has to offer.

Kettlewell said if any other RSOs are interested, they are more than welcome to attend.

“It’s a great opportunity for them to reach out to potential future students,” said Kettlewell. Another purpose is to show high school students what is out there after high school and everything college has to offer.

Christina Cook, who is also helping coordinate Education Exploration, could not be reached for comment as of press time.

The Association of Future Educators and Kappa Delta Pi will be putting on Education Exploration. n
