2011 Cesar Chavez March and Gathering

Ferris State University mem­bers can par­tic­i­pate in the 2011 Cesar Chavez Social Injustice March and Gathering in Grand Rapids on March 31. The march and gath­er­ing will honor the life of Chavez, a past migrant farm worker leader, for his work toward equal­ity among farm work­ers and envi­ron­men­tal jus­tice through­out the United States. Chavez passed away in 1993 and was the founder of the United Farm Workers of America. The march will begin at 10 a.m. and con­tinue until 2:30 p.m. The 11th annual march is free and open to the cam­pus com­mu­nity. It is spon­sored by Grand Rapids Community College. Spoken Word Performance by Emily P. Lawsin

Emily Lawsin, a Filipino guest speaker, will visit Ferris State University April 6 to present how her his­tory becomes our story in “History, HERstory, OURstories: Asian American Spoken Word Performance.” The event will be held in IRC 120 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the pub­lic. Lawsin is an author, com­mu­nity activist and award-winning University of Michigan pro­fes­sor. She has been teach­ing at the University of Michigan since 2000 and pre­vi­ously taught at the University of California Los Angeles from 1994 to 2000. Throughout the per­for­mance she will incor­po­rate vignettes, oral his­tory and spo­ken word poetry to dis­play her per­sonal jour­ney through Asian America for the Ferris com­mu­nity. Lawsin will dis­cuss her family’s world of strug­gle, resis­tance and their love of food. The spo­ken poet has per­formed on stage and on the radio through­out the United States since 1990. 2011 Chevy Volt vis­its Ferris State

Ferris State’s 4th annual Michigan Energy Conference will host the 2011 Chevy Volt April 13 and 14. It will be on dis­play from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Kristin Zimmerman, a rep­re­sen­ta­tive of General Motors research and devel­op­ment and the Volt infra­struc­ture team, will be vis­it­ing the exhibit hall April 13 at noon to dis­cuss the vehicle’s sig­nif­i­cance and energy-saving high­lights. The con­fer­ence will offer mul­ti­ple pre­sen­ta­tions about top­ics such as code and reg­u­la­tory updates, facil­i­ties and energy opti­miza­tion case stud­ies, energy sus­tain­abil­ity, Energy Model and Applications, Energy Education and Science of Energy and Residential.
