How to: find a job after graduation

Tips on how to impress a future employer

Searching for a job after graduation can seem like a daunting task, but learning the proper skills can increase your chances of landing the spot.

The words used in an interview can make or break the possibility of hearing “You’re hired.” The popular job-search website Monster.com offers some interviewing tips to convince the company you’re the right candidate.

If an employer asks the question, “Why should we hire you?” one of the first responses you should give is, “Because I’m a good fit for the position.” But, remember to give details – why are you a good fit for the position? What are your skills, talents and strengths? Another good answer would be, “I have what it takes to solve problems and do the job.”

Individuals who have been interviewed by employers previously give suggestions such as smiling and giving answers when being asked questions – just nodding “yes” or “no” is not suitable.

Asking questions is also critical; indicating that you want to know more about the position shows the employer you are serious about receiving the position.

Tips from Career Services at Ferris include a series of questions an interviewee should ask the interviewer, some of which include:

What future changes do you see in this company?

What significant changes has the company experienced in the past year?

What is the greatest challenge, from your perspective, that the organization faces during the next year?

What do you see as the biggest areas of needed improvement within the company?

Who are your major competitors?

What differentiates your company from your competition?

What kind of advancement opportunities does your company offer?

In what ways does this company value its employees?

On average, how long do most employees stay with this company/position?

Can you explain the kind of in-house training your company offers?

Some preparation one should take before beginning the interview process also includes opening a professional email account, changing your voicemail message to a professional message that includes your name, and making a list of important information when calling to get an interview.

In addition, marketing yourself can open up career opportunities. Writing an effective resume/cover letter, selling stories in the interview, and creating a portfolio will increase your chances.

Also, networking is important. Getting to know employers from job fairs on campus and joining a professional networking website such as LinkedIn will aid in the preparation of finding a solid job after receiving your degree. n
