Located in the cen­ter of Big Rapids, the Big Rapids Riverwalk is a his­toric part of the community.

Traveling along the Muskegon River, Big Rapids’ Riverwalk starts in down­town Big Rapids and con­tin­ues through Northend Riverside Park. The Riverwalk’s 2.6 mile stretch was funded par­tially by cit­i­zens of the area, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund and the city of Big Rapids. The community-led project, which raised over $1 mil­lion, includes an aggre­gated fish­ing ter­race allow­ing com­mu­nity mem­bers access to the river’s edge. (more…)

 
 
 

Banner Year for Bulldogs

Men’s golf earns back-to-back top-10 finishes at nationals

The Bulldogs fin­ished tied for sev­enth at the 2010 Men’s Golf Championships, rep­re­sent­ing the high­est fin­ish in school history.

The Bulldogs fin­ished eighth in the national cham­pi­onships last year and this sea­son marked the school’s 14th appear­ance in pro­gram his­tory in the event. The Bulldogs, who fin­ished the sea­son ranked 24th in the final Golf World/Nike Golf Division II Coaches’ Poll of the spring sea­son, started out strong in the open­ing round with a team score of 305 to move into third place. Robert Barnum and other mem­bers of the Ferris State com­mu­nity cre­ated a sculp­ture that hon­ors the past, present, and future of Ferris State University.

This year is Ferris’ 125th Anniversary. Robert Barnum, pro­fes­sor and res­i­dent artist for Ferris State University, was cho­sen to develop and cre­ate a mon­u­ment of sorts to honor how far the uni­ver­sity has come. Barnum said the project was orig­i­nated by Bruce Dilg, pro­fes­sor at FSU, and work began on it in October. (more…)

 
 

Big Rapids Renovation

Construction crews will repave streets and install new streetlights downtown

The city of Big Rapids will get a face-lift this sum­mer with the Downtown Big Rapids Streetscape Project, which broke ground May 3.

Some of the enhance­ments include road con­struc­tion with new pave­ment and curb, as well as new side­walks in some areas. In addi­tion, new LED street­lights, trees, and planter areas will be added. Pocket Park will be ren­o­vated as well and the remain­ing brick cross­walks down­town will be removed.

Roger Schneidt, Deputy Director of Public Works, said the mer­chants in the Downtown Business Association (DBA) began the plan­ning process in 2006. (more…)
