Something to Prove

by Published: Aug 25, 2010

Striving to Improve: Ferris football players begin to practice for the 2010–2011 season, where they hope to improve on last season’s record of 1–10. With last season’s dismal 1–10 campaign in the past, the Bulldog football team comes into the 2010 season with renewed hope and a chip on its shoulder.

Coming into this season ranked 11th out of 14 teams in the 2010 GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll, you would not expect a one-win team to come into a new season with such optimism. Head coach Jeff Pierce believes that the sting of last year has motivated his team to come out and prove the critics wrong. (more…)

Please Put the Phone Away, I’m Talking to You

It’s improper etiquette to have a “text-ersation” while having an actual conversation

by Published: Aug 25, 2010

When I’m having a conversation with someone, I find it a bit rude when I notice they are glancing at their phone every few minutes.

I understand that text messaging, Facebook, Twitter, etc. has improved our lives in numerous ways, but when I’m in the company of someone else and notice their fingers are glued to their QWERTY keyboard. It seems as if they’ve never made eye contact with another human being, I can’t help but become annoyed. (more…)

Tuition on the Rise

Ferris raises tuition for the 2010-2011 school year, as state budget remains stagnant

by Published: Aug 25, 2010

Stats

As Michigan’s budget continues to be reduced in various areas, tuition will be increasing for the 2010–2011 academic year at Ferris.

The Ferris Board of Trustees held a meeting July 14 to approve the decision for the increase. The added costs of compensation for Ferris employees, unfunded mandates from the state or federal governments, utilities and financial aid are some of the prime factors for the increase.

President Eisler said the university increases tuition to cover a portion of these annual costs as state funding decreases. (more…)

What a Waste

The difficulty of going green gives me the blues

by Published: Aug 25, 2010

As a college student living in the dorms, it can be extremely difficult to be environmentally conscious when disposing of garbage.

When I was growing up, my family recycled just about everything. We had separate bins for paper, cardboard, aluminum, and plastic. I was taught recycling was necessary to help limit pollution and protect the environment. (more…)

Fighting the 15

Keeping off the “freshman 15” is easier than you think

by Published: Aug 25, 2010

For many students, the drastic change of moving from home into the dorms can cause devastating changes on the scale.

Adjusting to cafeterias at college, which offer dozens of food choices at nearly all hours of the day, is not an easy thing for most college students. It is easy to drop in and grab an ice cream cone on the way to class or go for a late-night snack. Keeping the weight off requires having some knowledge about what you’re getting into.
