Stepshow promises to please

The 2010 Stepshow, hosted by the Black Greek Council, promises to deliver exciting music and unbelievable moves.

Step dancing is a phenomenon that is taking the nation by storm.

Brandon Cole, Stepshow chair and FSU senior in the HVACR program, is excited for the event.

“Last year, we had over 200 people attend,” said Cole. “This year, we’re hoping to get at least 300 people in the audience.”

Participants will compete in teams; this year, there are a total of seven teams competing.

Travis “Skittles” Konieczny, freshman in the marketing program, thinks stepping is an intense form of dance.

“Those moves are way too advanced for me,” said Konieczny. “Step dancers have some crazy skills.”

According to cbsnews.com, stepping is a historical tradition in black fraternities and sororities and is used to build unity within the group. Some step moves are thought to originate from the Welly dance, which is a stomp that South African laborers would do in Wellington boots. This dance has been modified into what we know today as stepping.

“Stepping is a tradition and an art,” said Keith Dos Reis, “Stomp the Yard” promoter. “[It is a] tradition for our fraternities and sororities, and an art form by the way we do it.”

The 2010 Stepshow will take place on Saturday, May 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. in Williams Auditorium. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Williams Box Office for $10. For more information, contact Brandon Cole at b_cole_228@yahoo.com or at 313−622−1265. n
