“It’s Just a Game”

Professional sports rivalries can often get out of hand

by Published: Feb 24, 2010

The satirical newspaper The Onion sells a t-shirt on its web site that says, “The sports team from my area is superior to the sports team from your area.”

This irrational support that many people have for professional sports teams is something that I have always been baffled by, and this slogan makes a great commentary on it. Die-hard fans who have no family or personal ties to a team other than geographical location will get their body tattooed with the team’s mascot or riot after a big game, but why? 6 Alternate Forms of College Financial Aid

by Kate Forgach, MCT Published: Feb 24, 2010

College tuition and fees have gone through the roof as government funding has dried up. This comes at a particularly bad time as college-saving accounts have toppled. At the same time, supplemental work for students has dried up as older American’s, laid-off from career-track jobs, willingly accept minimum-wage jobs just to bring in some cash.

College endowments also continue to shrink, making it more difficult for colleges to offer grants and scholarships. Finally, private student loans are harder to obtain, with a drop in about 30 percent of loans as banks raised lending standards. (more…)

Ward, a professor in the marketing department, said his job is to prepare students for careers in the marketing profession, which requires him to know what is going on in the business and what is coming next. (more…)

Socializing Student Loans

Obama, Congress looks to nationalize student lending and cut out private lenders

by Published: Feb 24, 2010

A bill presently before the Senate looks to overhaul the college loan and aid programs and end the role private lenders have in student loans.

The Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, which is strongly supported by President Obama and his administration, looks to nationalize the student lending business and eliminate federally subsidized private loans, essentially leaving the entire student loan industry in the hands of the government.
