Student Groups Help Haiti

by Published: Feb 17, 2010

Students across campus are continuing to rally aid for victims of Haiti’s deadly earthquake.

Vice President for Student Affairs Daniel Burcham, along with Chief Diversity Officer David Pilgrim, is continuing the initiative of providing various donations to the American Red Cross and Salvation Army.

With the help of organizations such as Student Government, the Office of Multicultural Student Services, Black Greek Council and other Registered Student Organizations (RSOs), the university is contributing donations of money, food and clothing to further assist in the rebuilding of Haiti.

University organizations such as the American Welding Society have raised over $700 in donations from both students and volunteers across campus. As both faculty and students continue involvement in the worldwide relief effort, the amount of university donations continues to increase across campus.

According to Burcham, the university expects to collect approximately $2,000 in donations by the end of the week. However, with Haiti’s death toll reports at over 150,000, Burcham understands donation efforts will be a continuous process.

“It is likely that Haiti will require long-term assistance. I would expect that efforts will continue into the near future,” said Burcham.

President of Phi Beta Sigma Tobi Olorunsola agrees the university’s initiative must become an ongoing effort. He encourages many individuals to continue to focus on Haiti’s long-term needs. Olorunsola sees Haiti’s recovery process as one requiring persistent dedication on behalf of both students and faculty members.

“I love the fact that the university is donating relief efforts to Haiti. I think this is something that should be ongoing and not necessarily have a time line,” said Olorunsola.

Many students on campus remain dedicated to Haiti’s cause. Nuclear medicine technology junior Correy Yarborough feels the students’ decision to get involved reflects growth in the responsibility of the campus.

“I feel that donating to Haiti is the right thing to do. I have the utmost respect for those students who are trying to make a difference. It shows maturity and heart,” said Yarborough.

Currently, Ferris is continuing its active role in the global effort to support those devastated by Haiti’s massive earthquake.
