Miles and Miles

Tina Muir provisionally qualified for the NCAA II Indoor Championships in the mile

The Ferris State women’s and men’s track teams com­bined for 14 indi­vid­ual per­for­mances in the top eleven at the GVSU Bob Eubanks Open.

The women’s team took four of the top five spots in the mile run, which included 35 run­ners. Three of those top four fin­ish­ers for the Bulldogs were fresh­men. (more…)

 
 

Revised Take on the Decade

Astronomical Year Numbering is still in use, as well as the Gregorian calendar

After I wrote an arti­cle in this space for the Jan. 13 issue of the Torch say­ing that 2010 was the last year of the cur­rent decade, not the first year of the next, I received an influx of com­ments from friends and oth­ers telling me that I was wrong.

I was caught off-guard because I had done my research, which had told me that the Gregorian cal­en­dar was the inter­na­tion­ally accepted cal­en­dar, and that Astronomical Year Numbering (AYN) and the Julian cal­en­dar were out­dated. (more…)

 
 

Ferris Fact or Fiction

If a stu­dent gets hit and injured by a car on cam­pus, they will not receive free tuition.

“This seems to be a rumor and noth­ing more than that,” said Vice President of Administration and Financial Affairs Jerry Scoby. “My under­stand­ing is that pub­lic safety would be con­tacted to assist the stu­dent with any med­ical needs, inves­ti­gate the acci­dent and con­nect them with an ambu­lance if they needed that kind of ser­vice.” (more…)

Speaker Jeff Havens comes to campus with career advice

Speaker, come­dian, and author Jeff Havens will be com­ing to cam­pus to present his lec­ture enti­tled “How to get Fired!”

Havens grad­u­ated as a Phi Beta Kappa from Vanderbilt University. He orig­i­nally began his career as a high school English teacher, but soon fol­lowed his father into the world of stand-up com­edy. (more…)

Marijuana Use

On Jan. 20 at 11:15 p.m., there was a report of a sub­ject using mar­i­juana in Lot 4. Three sub­jects were referred to the Office of Student Conduct.

Missing Purse

On Jan. 19 at 3:30 p.m., there was a report of theft com­plaint at the Rock Café. A purse was stolen from a cloak room.

Marijuana Complaint

On Jan. 18 at 11:10 p.m., offi­cers assisted hall staff with a mar­i­juana com­plaint in McNerny Hall. Matters were referred to the hall staff to handle.

Someone Else’s Belongings

On Jan. 18 at 5:15 p.m., offi­cers received a civil com­plaint about two stu­dents in Clark Hall. Clothing was loaned and not returned. The stu­dent later received some items.

MIP

On Jan. 17 at 2:20 a.m., offi­cers stopped a vehi­cle on Campus Drive for fail­ure to stop at a sign. The pas­sen­ger was found to be a Minor in Possion (MIP) and was tick­eted for the same.

Suspended License

On Jan. 15 at 3 p.m., offi­cers stopped a vehi­cle on Ferris Drive for fail­ure to stop at sign. The driver’s license was sus­pended and was tick­eted for the same.

Hit and Run

On Jan. 14 at 12:25 p.m., there was a report of a hit and run in Lot 4.

Suspicious Door Damage

On Jan. 14 at 10:20 a.m., there was a report of vehi­cle dam­age to a pas­sen­ger door in Lot 2.

Accidents Happen

On Jan. 14 at 1:12 p.m., there was a two car acci­dent in Lot 68.

Stolen Camera

On Jan. 14 at 7 p.m., there was a report of a cam­era stolen from a room in Cramer Hall. Investigation still continues.

Disorderly Complaint

On Jan. 14 at 7:15 p.m., there was a report of a dis­or­derly com­plaint at the Rock Café. The behav­ior con­cerned a stolen back­pack. One party accused the other of theft. They were referred to the Office of Student Conduct.

Ticket Totals

From Jan. 15 to the 21, the depart­ment of pub­lic safety iden­ti­fied 525 vio­la­tors. Each vio­la­tor was tick­eted for a total of $8,950. Actual amount depends on whether each ticket was paid, voided, or reduced.

Group Work Bad for the Buck

If I’m pay­ing for it, each class ses­sion should be infor­ma­tive and stim­u­lat­ing, not a time when we’re por­tioned into teams to solve prob­lems as a group.

I’m not a fan of the price tag on group work. If it’s sup­ple­men­tary to the lec­ture and meant to be done out of class, that’s okay. It almost seems like part of the home­work. But when actual class lec­ture time is taken up to develop ideas as a group, that’s a mis­use of my $316 per credit hour and a cop out by the instruc­tor. (more…)

 
 

New Michigan Scholarship

Michigan’s econ­omy has been severely impacted by the reces­sion, but CIBER, Inc. and its part­ners are look­ing to Michigan stu­dents for solu­tions on how to improve it.

The pro­gram is called the “Motivate Michigan” ini­tia­tive. It is an idea-based com­pe­ti­tion designed for eco­nomic impact. Students are able to sub­mit ideas on how to improve Michigan’s eco­nomic sit­u­a­tion and can win one of 10 pos­si­ble schol­ar­ships for their ideas. (more…)

Jumping on the national band­wagon to pro­mote healthy eat­ing, the fast food restau­rant Taco Bell is pro­mot­ing a new “Drive-Thru Diet.”

The menu, which fea­tures seven items with less than nine grams of fat, is being backed by the franchise’s new spokes­woman Christine Dougherty, who lost 54 pounds by fol­low­ing the plan. (more…)
