Crimson & Gold Becomes Ferris Magazine

by Published: Jan 13, 2010

Ferris Magazine, previously known as Crimson & Gold, is the university’s free magazine publication that is published bi-annually.

It is geared toward a large range of Ferris constituents including alumni, donors, and friends of the university, as well as faculty, staff, and students. It is currently in its fifteenth year in newsprint.

The magazine is published by the Office of University Advancement and Marketing under the direction of Vice President John Willey. Marc Sheehan, Ferris’ Communications Officer, serves as editor of the magazine.

An editorial board from University Advancement and Marketing develops and produces the magazine. Additionally a faculty and staff board consisting of representatives from across the university community provides input on design and content.

The history of a university magazine dates back to 1925 when Ferris produced a magazine-format publication called School Bulletin. In 1950 it became a tabloid newsprint publication entitled School Bulletin/Alumni Journal, which then became the Alumni Journal in 1953.

It remained so until 1972 when it became the Alumni Bulletin. The magazine kept this title for over two decades until Crimson & Gold began publication in 1994.

The magazine went through a major redesign this fall, which included the name change from Crimson & Gold to Ferris Magazine.

Sheehan said, “I think [the name] Ferris Magazine embodies our university’s identity and history completely and succinctly.” He does believe, however, that for many alumni Crimson & Gold conveys their experiences at Ferris, which is why the magazine chose to keep that name for the alumni section.

The university mails copies of the magazine to Ferris alumni. Copies of the magazine are available on campus in FLITE and the Alumni Office in the Prakken Building. It is also available for viewing online at ferris.edu/htmls/alumni/ferrismagazine.
