The relationship caste system, commonly known as dating “out of one’s league”, is a system that most try in vain not to believe in; however, it is still widely practiced.
My previous article, Sex and the City gives bad relationship advice, briefly mentions dating out of caste.
Sex and the City character Miranda Hobbs, a Harvard educated New York City lawyer, falls in love, has a baby with and marries bartender turned bar owner, Steve Brady. This made-for-TV fairy tale was not so cut and dry though. Hobbs and Brady’s relationship had several road blocks: (more…)
Often we hear that the holidays have fallen victim to commercialization and consumerism; leaving behind the true goal of the season: sharing with those you care about.
To that, I say tough tinsel!
According to a Gallup poll in 2000, 85 percent of Americans feel that the holiday season has become too commercialized.
But when “Home Alone” or “Rudolph and the Island of Misfit Toys” comes on TV, we don’t seem to mind settling down and watching it. (more…)

Emily Burley, member of the Ferris State Chapter of Red Cross and pre-pharmacy major, said, “Our goal is usually around 87 (donations), the first two (blood drives) we got more.”
The goal for each blood drive is around 80 to 90 participants for the nine blood drives held on campus during the year.
Burley said during the last blood drive, a total of 90 liters of blood was donated, which is more than they usually receive. (more…)

The Ferris women’s basketball team won their first conference game on Thursday with a 75–67 victory over the Ashland Eagles.
Junior guard Becci Houdek led all scorers with 20 points and five assists. Junior forward Tiara Adams recorded a double-double with 19 points, 14 of which came in the second half, and 10 rebounds.
As a team, the Bulldogs shot 46.7 percent from the court, including 36.8 percent from the three-point line. Ferris had 22 second-chance points and held the Eagles to only 10. Sophomore guard/forward Kelsey DeNoyelles said the team’s primary focus has been on defense and rebounding.
“We never back down or hang our heads,” said DeNoyelles.
The Bulldogs took a 20–19 lead with eight minutes left in the first half and never trailed the rest of the way. The game was close throughout, however, as the largest lead for either team was just eight points. Head coach Tracey Dorow said the team sent a new message to other teams. (more…)
Dan Hamilton made some erroneous statements in last week’s Op-Ed: “When Politics Ignores Science.”
It is discouraging how Hamilton makes a claim of policy look like a claim of fact. He writes that scientific bills are being blocked, and that those who oppose research funding for alternative energy are “undermining not only truth, but progress.”
Congress has no business legislating scientific truth. Regardless of how congress votes, the sun will rise tomorrow, water will still be made of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen, and I will still be a homosapien sharing a common ancestor with a chimp. Truth isn’t the issue; it’s policy. (more…)
Given in no particular order, here are some gifts you may want to keep the receipt for:
The Bulldog hockey team added three signees to the 2010–2011 recruiting class.
Ferris inked three forwards during November’s early signing period, giving the Bulldogs a quick start in the recruiting process. The Bulldogs focused on recruiting forwards since several seniors at the position will be graduating this year.
One of the top signees is Andy Huff, a native of Howell, who is currently playing for the Traverse City North Stars of the North American Hockey League (NAHL).
Huff was a high-profile recruit, having his name on the NHL’s watchlist for the 2010 entry draft. Huff is also tied for 12th among the NAHL’s leading point scorers and is the 11th leading scorer among forwards in the league.
Joining Huff will be fellow NAHL forward Justin DeMartino, who is currently a member of the Springfield (Ill.) Jr. Blues. DeMartino comes to the Ferris program with a strong background, as he posted a team-best tying 84 points while playing for the Detroit Little Caesars last season. DeMartino was also part of the Little Caesars Midget Minor team that won the 2008 USA Hockey Under-16 National Championship.
Rounding out the recent signees is Cory Kane, who is playing for the Vernon (British Columbia) Vipers of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). Kane is currently ranked at 27 on the BCHL’s scoring leaders chart for the 2009–2010 season. Kane put up 54 overall points along with 24 goals and 30 assist in the 2008–2009 season.
Competitive Spirit: Sophomore Ashley Huntey demonstrates that her skills extend beyond her 229 kills and 365 digs attained this season in volleyball and onto the basketball court, helping the Bulldogs toward their 75–57 win over Ashland on Friday. After helping the Ferris volleyball team reach the NCAA Division II tournament, Huntey has her sights on helping turn around the women’s basketball team, which went 13–15 last season.
Huntey, a Stanwood native, played volleyball and basketball all four years of high school and played softball in her junior year at Morley-Stanwood High School. In volleyball, she attained all-state honors all four years, was named the Big Rapids Pioneer Dream Team Player of the Year in her final two seasons, and helped lead her high school to its first state championship in 2007.
In basketball, Huntey was named an all-area performer from 2004–2006 and was named to the all-state team in 2006.
Since she played multiple sports throughout high school, Huntey said it felt strange to play only volleyball in her first year at Ferris. (more…)
