Student Government urges students to ‘get involved’ at events and with organizations

120_2034At the State of the Student Union Address, Student Government President Claire Gould discussed up and coming events on campus students can get involved in.

Only 15 were present during the speech, including Student Government members Gould, Vice President Ian Nagy, Director of Finance Derek Menefee and Director of Internal Assessment DeAja Packer, and Administrative Assistant Shikara Watkins.

Gould discussed events that Student Government has sponsored such as the Blues & BBQ, which was held to raise money for Student Government’s Student Scholarship, which will be given out in the Spring Semester. The Holiday Food Drive is another event Student Government will be sponsoring in the near future.

“Our goal is to raise 7,500 lbs. of food,” said Gould of the campus food drive, an annual campus event of friendly competition.

Gould focused her speech around the topic of “getting students more aware of campus.” Gould discussed visiting FSUS classes to let students know that involvement in student organizations is crucial for future job opportunities.

Gould suggested event co-sponsorship and aiding other Registered Student Organizations in their events.

“We want to help any organization that we can,” said Gould of co-sponsoring other RSO events.

Vice President Ian Nagy is in charge of the Census Committee, which will involve covering and discussing students and the 2010 Census.

One of Student Government’s events, known as “The BIG Event”, was discussed as well. The BIG Event helps students get volunteer hours. Gould said it is the largest student-led community service project on campus.

Pedestrian affairs and safety is also a current discussion among the Student Government.

“We are truly for students,” said Gould of Student Government’s purpose.
